I'm not sure if I'm lucky, unique, special, or just plain out weird. I lived in a pride that I knew I'd call home.

Well... kind of.

This pride was a pretty standard pride. There was a pride male, some lionesses, and some cubs here and there. What's strange about me though, is that I was the only cub born in a single season. I'm not sure how this happened. Did something happen during mating season? Did the male leader even- Actually, I think I shouldn't talk about that any further...

As a cub, I remember being so lonely. All the other cubs were older than me and were already moving on from dumb cub games or whatever.  Most of my young life was just hanging out with my mom. My mom had a sister who I don't really have an opinion on. And even if I did have an opinion, it wouldn't be so positive.

One day, I was trying to trap a small grasshopper moving around in the grass. My mom was talking with the pride leader at the time. I wasn't really sure what they were talking about but I heard a lot of arguing.

I got low on the grass and leaped to the grasshopper. It got cupped around my paws.

"Nuru! Time for your bath!" I suddenly heard my mom call out my name. Unfortunately, that made me lose the grasshopper. I trotted towards mom with a smirk on my face.

As my mom cleaned me, I asked a bunch of questions. My cub mind always wandered all over the place which would lead to questions that needed answers. That day, I remember asking mom this one question: "Mom? What were you and dad talking about?"

"Nuru, please don't call that lion your dad."

"Why not? One of the older cubs told me that he was the dad of all the cubs!"

"Yes, technically that's true. But that still doesn't mean you can call him your dad."

"Another cub said that he was the reason all the cubs were born. How does that work?"

"You'll learn when you're older."

"Oh... but anyway, what were you talking about with da- I mean that lion?"

"Something you wouldn't understand, Nuru." Mom said before finishing my bath.

"Hmm. I gonna ask him myself." I say before running off.

"Nuru! Don't- Ugh..."

"You need to control that girl." Mom's sister said.

In the center of the pride, there was a large rock formation where the leader of the pride would stay. The rocks were a bit challenging to climb as a cub. But I was able to get up to where the Pride leader was.

I went forth and sat down beside him. He wasn't able to notice me after a few minutes. He groaned deeply. "Do you need something cub?" he asked in a deep voice.

"What were you and mom talking about?"

He looked over at me with an eyebrow raised. "Have you asked your mother?"

"Yes, but she said I wouldn't understand. But I want to know I really, really do!"

"You want to know?"

"Mmhm!" I nodded my head, saying yes.

He shifted my head to another direction. "What do you see over there?"
