I don't have much to see here. I was just tasked in a university literature class to write a story under a thousand words and this was one of the ideas I'd had playing around my mind that I thought I could tell so briefly.
It's not based on any real experience, apart from the fact one of our cats, years ago, fell pregnant with a litter of kittens and was too young to be a mother, so sadly she kept neglecting them and they all soon died off despite our efforts to encourage the mother.
I approached this with two quite obvious influences in mind: the famous "locked room" mysteries, rendered most memorably in Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue, and a little Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Random fact:
When my class read and critiqued this story, someone commented that I must hate cats. Actually, I love cats. Not as much as dogs though.
