some implied California x New York, but it could just be homies cuddling yk
=====

To say it had been a messy day would be an understatement.

Florida had been on his normal bs, DC was doing fuck all to prevent the chaos, the midwest was arguing, Oklahoma and Texas were about to start a war at the table, and the west had gotten California to just leave the meeting. That last bit being the most important.

No one was particularly paying much attention to what they were saying to him until more and more states joined in. And unlike all the other times, since Cali wasn't bothering to say anything back, the teasing just kept on going. Every time New York chose to look over at him, he either had a blank stare looking down, or looked like he was trying his best not to cry. He kept fidgeting with his fingers, and was subtly trembling the entire time. He wasn't sure how no one else saw it, and if they did, no one seemed like they cared.

Even if half of the states were paying no mind to what was happening, there was now a almost small crowd just relentlessly sticking jabs a the guy. It almost made him feel bad for him.

...Okay, it actually did make him feel bad for him.

It wasn't until Oregon joined that he actually started actually getting mad for Cali.

Didn't he call him his friend once?
Do don't they see how upset he is?

"Alright enough! We only have 20 minutes left in the meeting and I'd like us to actually get through one talking point. Everyone quiet down and get in your seats."

DC waited for everyone to quiet down.

"Okay, now that everyone is listening, we shoould.." he paused for a moment while glancing around the room, "where's California?"

Everyone looked around, only to realize that he was gone.

"Jesus, maybe try not chase him away next time?" New York murmured. A few states looked up at him in shock.

"Not you defending him." Washington replied.

"I'm not trying to defend him, I'm trying to saying you guys were being assholes."

Florida butted in, "You know you're fucked up if New York is calling you an asshole."

A few states murmured in agreement. Everyone who had been involved in the teasing had just rolled their eyes, or looked at away in annoyance.

"It's not like he's not use to it. He'll get over it eventually." Texas spoke, before DC called everyone in again so they didn't get off track again.

Now here he was.

Twenty minutes later. Standing outside of California's door. Quietly waiting for him to respond. Another minute had passed before he decided to knock again.

"California? It's me, please open the door." He a bit louder just in case he didn't hear him well the first time around. He tried opening the door to only find it unlocked. Hesitantly, he opened the door, and quickly shut it behind him.

California was quietly sitting on the bed, with his legs criss-crossed, and a blanket over him. He didn't seem to mind New York's sudden entry.

"Alright Goldie," he plopped down next to him on the bed, "talk to me."

Cali tightened his grip on the soft blanket, looking up at New York softly. He looked back down, and York could barely just see his eyes tear up

"I fucking hate those meetings.."

"Well that makes two of us at least." He took off his jacket. "But I know your reasons are better then mine."

Cali sat there for a second, trying to collect his thoughts. He ranted for only about 3 minute before his voice got too shaky. He suddenly stopped his sentence and turned his head away.

"Hey now, you alright bud?"

New York tilted Cali's head back slightly to see him. It was clear that he was just trying to hide that fact that he was crying. York gave him a sympathetic look, and scooted a bit closer to him. He softly wrapped his arm around Cali's waist, and Cali shuffled closer to him, burying his face in York's chest.

New York heard him quietly muffle something.

"What was that?" His voice was soft.

"..I really thought he was my friend, York..."

Aaand, his heart melted.

He held California closer, running his fingers through his hair trying to comfort him, even if he didn't know if he was doing a good job or not. He would constantly hear quiet choked sobs and gasps come to Cali, just quietly shushing him every once in a while hoping to calm him down.

New York took a minute to think. Would the others feel bad if they saw this? If they knew how much their words hurt him, would they stop? Part of him thought they would. He hoped they would. If they didn't, he wouldn't know what to even think of some of them anymore. It's not like he cares much about most of them, but he still expect them to be somewhat decent. The though lingered for a bit.

New York felt his shirt being tugged. He looked down to see Cali's hand slipping, and losing his grip. It was only then when York heard his quiet breathing, he was asleep. Gently, New York placed him back in bed, both of them still clinging onto each other. He thought for a second, staying with Cali for a little bit longer wouldn't hurt. He'd just lay down with him for a little bit.

He hugged the sleeping state a bit tighter, and slowly dozed off.
