Ann was awaiting Marcella to come home from the park. She was excited to hear all about Andy's day, and maybe get a little playtime in before Marcella's bedtime. She soon heard the floor creak, and Marcella came walking into the nursery. She wore a very sad expression, and her face was streaked with tears. "What happened?" Ann thought to herself. She then noticed that Marcella wasn't holding Andy. Had something happened to him? Marcella picked up Ann and gave her a tight squeeze.
"I lost him raggedy Ann! I was at the park playing with some other kids and I lost him! I retraced my steps and everything!" She said between sobs.
Ann was extremely upset too but she couldn't show it while humans were around. After a fit of crying, Marcella heard her mom call her for dinner so she put Ann down in the little rocking chair. "I'll go back to the park and look for Andy tomorrow after school if I can!" She said as she tried to wipe the last of her tears away. With that she closed the door and walked down the stairs. Once the toys heard Marcella walk down they got out of their places, a lot of them walking over to comfort Ann after hearing the events that had just transpired.
"I'm so sorry Annie..." Susie pincushion said, knowing how hard this must be on her.
"Are ya gonna be okay?" Grandpa chimed in.
"I'm...I'm okay." Ann replied. It wasn't really the truth but she wanted to stay strong for the others. In fact she had to hold herself back from crying right now. Babette, however, could tell that Ann wasn't taking this well, and pushed her way to the front of the crowd.
"Everyone give Ann some space, she doesn't need to be bombarded by all of you right now." She stated. Then she turned to Ann and asked "Would you like to go up to the dollhouse? So we can have some peace and quiet for a bit?" Ann nodded, and Babette took her hand and guided her up to the dollhouse.
Once Ann was finally alone with just Babette she flopped on the doll bed and started sobbing into a pillow. Babette sat next to her and hugged her tight.
"Why couldn't it have been me?" Ann choked out. Babette hugged her even tighter, if that was even possible.
"Do not say such things!" Babette exclaimed. She ran her porcelain fingers through Ann's yarn hair.
"But it would have been so much better!" Ann cried. "I've been to the park with Marcella so many times! I would have been able to figure out how to get home! But Andy hasn't been to the park many times at all... He doesn't know his way around that place... especially not all alone." Hearing Ann say that gave Babette an idea.
"You said you know the park well, yes?" Ann looked up at her and sniffled.
"Yes, why?" Then Ann had a moment of realization. "Do.. Do you think I would be able to find him? You know if I went out to the park?"
"That's exactly what I was thinking." Replied Babette. With that Ann wiped her tears away and brushed off her apron as she got up.
"Then that's what I'll do." Her voice sounded more confident but still cracked a bit as she spoke. Babette smiled. She was glad to see Ann's spirit bright, even if it was just a bit. They both walked out to the balcony of the dollhouse and Ann called everyone. "I'm going to get Andy back home, I'll be gone for the night but I'll be back by morning before Marcella even notices I'm gone." After her announcement she started to walk out of the dollhouse and got stopped by Babette.
"Where do you think you're going?" Babette asked.
Ann replied with a little confusion "to get my brother? What do you mean?"
"You did not think I was going to let you go alone did you?" Babette asked, smirking slightly.
"You're coming with me?"
"Oui, I am your girlfriend after all." Hearing those words made Ann's little candy heart beat so fast it's a wonder it didn't burst out of the seams of her cloth!
"Thank you Babette this means a great deal to me." Ann said looking up and smiling at the porcelain doll. They quickly walked out of the dollhouse only to be halted again, This time it was Camel.
"If you're going to find Andy, Then I'm here to help you!" He said beaming. They had helped him so much in the past, he thought this could help repay Ann and Andy, though Ann never expected anything in return for what they did.
"Camel are you sure? It's a long way to the park.." Ann replied.
"of course I'm sure! I'm as sure of this as I ever could be!" He replied. He then nodded to empathize his point. It seemed she wouldn't be able to persuade him otherwise, so she just nodded back to show she understood.
They soon walked to the window and hopped upon the window sill. Ann, with the help of Babette and Camel, opened the window. Ann was the first to jump out, with camel following close behind. Babette stood on the window sill, still looking down. She was trying to think of a way down. She was a porcelain doll, and if she fell from a height such as this she would surely crack, She wasn't made with soft cotton fabric like the other two. Ann and Camel looked up at Babette waiting for her. Then Camel finally broke the silence.
"What's with all the hold up Babette?" He called up.
"Well you see, I am a fragile doll, I can not just flop down like you two can.." she said gloomily. She really wanted to accompany her girlfriend, but she knew she'd be of no use if she was broken, in fact that would surely slow them down! Ann rubbed her forehead, deep in thought as she pondered what to do. Then she finally got an answer.
"Camel, help me gather leaves! We will make a nice leaf pile so Babette can jump down safely!" They both nodded and started collecting leaves of all sizes, making a big leaf pile. Babette was still a little scared of the fall, so Ann assured her everything would be alright and stepped to the top of the pile of leaves.
"I will catch you! That way if the leaf pile doesn't work as well as we thought it would, you'll still be safe!" Ann held her arms out to catch Babette. Babette gulped but jumped down as gracefully as she could manage anyways. The wind caught her dress, which made her fall slightly slower than expected. As she got closer to the ground, Raggedy Ann caught Babette in her arms, holding her bridal style. Ann softly helped Babette to her feet. "Are you ready everyone?" She asked, smiling. Both Camel and Babette nodded in agreement.
"Hop aboard!" Camel said and Babette and Ann took a seat upon his back. He then started to trot towards the pavement road.
"Off to the park we go!" Ann's confidence seemed to be coming back to her. She knew they would find Andy and bring him home safely! And she felt even more sure of that now that her friends accompanied her.
