Sophie slowly glanced up from where she had been shackled to the floor with her legs crossed to draw warmth to her chilled and scarcely clothed body, eyes and mouth all set to take on that pleading quality which always worked to help her get her way. And in this case, freedom.

Out of nowhere, a thought occurred to her. It was a decision to make on her own, with her own judgement: herself or others.

One choice to make. And fast. It had to be made now, in this instant.

And in that moment, she suddenly knew.

Knew why he had come back.

Knew why Fintan was so distant, so drifting.

Knew why the leaders were so ruthless.

Knew why she and her siblings had felt the urge to flee for the second time the instant they had touched the crown.

Knew why she had such a deep connection to the massively beautiful, no longer hidden caverns discovered beneath Emery's former castle.

But most importantly, she knew how. How it all was made possible. How it all made sense. How everything connected and fit into place.

Knew and mapped out the bigger picture.

And when she looked up into the conflicted, swirling and stormy eyes of her pseudo, pretentious ruler, she knew it was time.

I'm better than begging. I'm better than that. The thought reinforced her will, and strengthened her resolve to fight her own fight and brush off the sparseness of the past and the patronizing of the present. Only to focus on the future.

The ultimate betrayal had begun, a long time past, but had been eroded and blinded by distracting choices, then forgotten about altogether.

Now was her only chance to fulfill it.

And fulfill it she fully intended to do.

The best kept secrets, after all, are the ones you never share.
