"Hi, come on in. Sit and make yourself comfortable," Sherri said nervously.
We walked in slowly past Sherri, Mae glaring at her.
We sat and watched her act like she was dusting off stuff with her hand then she sat on the love seat. We walked over and sat on the wrap around couch in silence just staring and trying to figure out what to say.I looked at Mae then turned and looked back at Sherri shooting her a fake smile then crossing my legs.
"Are we going to talk Sherri, or sit here?" I asked slowly making sure to look her in her eyes, studying her nervous movements.
"Well, why don't we start with your questions?" She said quickly.
"Why did you leave?" Mae asked on edge.
"To protect you." Sherri said with no emotion.
"From what?" I asked coolly.
"None of your concern," she said.
"How the hell is it not OUR concern if you were protecting US. It must be about you. You were protecting yourself. From what?" I asked. "Tell me."
"Nothing Natalie. I was protecting you," she stated fidgeting with her hands.
"Bullshit!" Mae stood up pointing her finger at Sherri. "You left us Mom. You left me," she said pointing to her chest, tears threatening to crawl down her angry, red face. "You know I'm not like you or Natalie. I can't protect myself like you can. I don't have what you have. So how were you protecting me?"
"Sit down Mae. And calm down," I said, surprised by her sudden outburst. "We're here to get answers, not cry in each other's arms." I said carefully. She sat shooting me in the face with death glares.
"Now Sherri," I said looking back at her slowly, her eyes still wide from how her daughter just acted, "I don't want to be lied to again. After my parents were killed which was, what? A month before you left I think. All you could say is how much you wanted me staying with you and Mae because you and my mom were best friends and you felt like it was your job to take care of me because I had no one else, and because I knew what you were and you knew what I was and what I am. Even Mae didn't know what you were until you left because of me. It was our secret so I know why Mae did not know, but why would you leave a new born vampire of two months with your 18 year old daughter? How did you know I would not want her? To drain her of life? How do you know? I was so scared of what I could do to Mae. And you just le-" I was cut off by Sherri.
"She's like us, kind of."
