"There's so many people here." Judai remarked as they sat down. It is in fact a popular place because of the open duel arena and restaurant terrance that sat overlooking it.
"Yeah, but we didn't expect anything different. Remember how the website said it was a hot spot?" Johan replied, shucking his jacket off and draping it on the back of his chair. "We had to make reservations like a month ago."
"I do," Judai rolled his eyes, "but I didn't think they meant this busy."
Johan only hummed as he picked up the menu. The next few minutes consisted of small talk and comments about what they wanted to eat. They decided on this restaurant to celebrate their two-year anniversary as they could eat and watch some of the duels that took place in the arena below.
The waiter took their order and then told them it would be at least half an hour before their food was ready. Judai pouted slightly but was immediately distracted by a duelist on the field summoning Winged Kuriboh. He watched the duel intently, occasionally complimenting a move or tutting as they made a rookie mistake. Johan watched him fondly and added his own commentary when he felt like it.
Before they knew it their food had arrived and steaming plates of fried shrimp and pasta were placed in front of them. Judai dug in immediately after politely thanking the waiter and breaking his chopsticks. Johan followed suit and they passed the rest of the time in relative silence only broken when one of them felt like remarking on how good the food was or random suggestions on a duel happening below.
Judai snuck glances at Johan throughout the meal still awestruck by the fact that they were dating. Judai knew pretty soon after dueling Johan for the first time that he was in love but he never expected Johan to fall in love with him as well.
There were so many awkward moments that Judai now knew were Johan trying to flirt or make a move but Judai was so convinced it didn't mean anything that he would inadvertently make it weird or tense.
There was one time in particular that he always laughed at. They had decided to go to Kaiba Land for a weekend away from Duel Academy in their senior year. Johan and him had been waiting in the line to ride The Flight of the Blue Eyes White Dragon. (the name wasn't the most creative and the whole group made fun of it, but it was Seto Kaiba who named it. No one was expecting anything else.) Johan had brushed his hand against Judai's and Judai noticed it was cold. So he twisted around, grabbed a pair of gloves out of his bag, and offered them to Johan. Johan, obviously expecting Judai to offer his hand or politely retract it, was understandably shocked and took the gloves with a stuttered thank you.
Asuka and Jim, who were standing behind them, snickered at Johan's noticeable disappointment as he stared forlornly at Judai shuffling with the line. Jim patted Johan on the back and muttered words of encouragement.
Judai still couldn't get over that he'd given Johan gloves. It was early in the school year too so the weather was still warm enough for shorts. A smile worked its way onto his face and he grinned into his shrimp. Johan noticed and sent him a confused grin to which Judai winked at him. Johan rolled his eyes but let it go and went back to eating.
After about 30 minutes they'd finished and paid. Judai wanted to go duel downstairs and Johan agreed. They hadn't dueled in an embarrassingly long time and a quick duel would be fun.
They'd only been through a few turns before a small crowd had gathered around, no doubt noticing Judai's Winged Kuriboh and Elemental Heroes from his fight against Yugi, the King of Games. The crowd might've been a problem for someone else but they had years of public duels at the academy and professionally so they were used to tuning out a crowd and focusing on a duel while also entertaining their audience.
