A warm summer's day greeted the septic egos. The sun warmed the ground and a breezed cut through the thick heat making it perfect to be outside. This was why they were heading out for a picnic, a family bonding day of sorts and everyone had to come. Including a reluctant glitch who was glaring at everyone and a disgruntled doctor muttering about work he had to do.
Nevertheless Jackie, who had planned most of this unsurprisingly, led on towards the park with optimism and enthusiasm. "C'mon guys, it's gonna be fun!" He was met with varied responses. JJ gave a thumbs up, Henrik grumbled but nodded, Chase cheered, and Anti straight up hisses at the positivity. Jackie giggled nervously but paused to hear Marvin, who was walking next to him. "Well, I think it was a good idea, we could all use a break and some time outside." He smiled at Jackie who grinned back, eyes elated. Jackie always admired Marvin with his confidence and cool magic, finding himself enthralled when the other rambled and staring at him while he was reading. He quickly formed a crush but was far too scared to say anything...that is until today. Today was the day he'd resolved to finally share his feelings with the magician.
The made family finally arrived at the park with minimal damage, some light bickering and threats but nothing too bad. "Let's go!" Jackie exclaimed, excited. He ran into the park with Chase in tow, who was just happy to be out with people who cared about him. Pretty soon the picnic was in full swing, JJ and Henrik chilling on the blanket talking about whatever they pleased, Chase and Jackie running around playing frisbee and Marvin watching and totally not bumping the frisbee with magic when one of them was about to catch it. Even Anti had found a dark shady place to brood under a tree. After a bit of fun they all gather back at the big picnic blanket for food where there was banter and laughter around yummy snacks. Soon the sun started to set and they started winding down and cleaning up, getting ready to head back home after a fun day.
While the others finished gathering things, Jackie got Marvin's attention. "Hey, I wanna show you something, c'mon!" He grabbed Marvin's hand and led the confused cat away, "Wait-what about the others, where are we going??" He giggled at Jackie's enthusiasm. "Don't worry about them, they can handle things, you're gonna love this!" Jackie grinned and pulled Marvin to a clearing in the trees, leading him over to an opening with a brilliant view of the setting sun. "Ta-da!" Marvin gasped and stared in awe at the view, eyes sparkling. "Jackie this is beautiful." He spoke softly, as if worried louder words would break the wonder. Jackie nodded, standing next to Marvin and holding his hand while overlooking the colorful sky. He felt his heart beat pick up, his face warming a bit as he took a breath and faced Marvin, picking his hand up. "Hey Marv, there's something I wanted to tell you" Jackie looked at Marvin with a small smile and a light blush. Marvin tilted his head looking curious and confused, waiting patiently for the hero to continue. "I.. I like you, a lot and was wondering if you'd maybe go on a date with me?" He looked cautiously hopeful, trying not to look as eager or nervous as he felt. Marvin's face shifted from confused to uncertain, his eyes widening slightly. He bit his lip and looked back at Jackie with a bittersweet expression. "Jackie..you're so sweet and I appreciate you showing me this-" He gestured to the sunset. "-but I don't see you like that. You're a great friend and wonderful person I love you for it..I'm sorry"
Jackie felt his heart break, his shoulders dropping as his face fell the more Marvin spoke. He stared as the amazing, beautiful person in front of him didn't feel the same. It felt like a spike was driven through his chest that twisted with the bittersweet pain of being friend zoned. He pulled his hands away from Marvin, close to himself, and looked down trying to hide his hurt. "It's ok, I understand you don't have to apologies- it was silly just forget I said anything." He held his arms and looked away at the ground. Marvin watched Jackie's reaction sadly, reaching out for him then hesitating, worried he'd make things worse. "I'll go help the others..take as long as you need" He said quietly and walked away, giving Jackie some space to process on his own.
Jackie listened to Marvin's footsteps as he walked away, waiting for them to leave before looking up again. He looked up at the now darkened sky, the sun having completely set hiding all the pretty colors once there and replacing then with cold darkness. He sat in the grass with tears pricking his vision, hugging himself and sniffling quietly. He understood, Marvin didn't have to like him back he was entitled to his feelings, that didn't stop the pain in his chest or the tears from spilling down his face. He sat and cried in the cold, quiet dark of the park not expecting to move any time soon. Feeling the hurt of an unrequited love, a pain unlike any other.
His sadness was interrupted after a moment, however, by Anti of all people walking over and sitting next to him. He was quiet besides the occasional sniffle, not looking at the glitch finding the grass below more interesting. "..you gonna be ok?" He heard the distorted voice of Anti Speak to him in an oddly caring tone, one he wasn't used to hearing. He stayed silent, not sure what Anti was doing. "I was gonna scare you guys, thought it would be funny..I heard everything" He continued regardless of the lack of response, staring up at the sky. "I know I'm probably the last person you want to talk to right now but I'm the only one here. I know I'm a jerk sometimes but that sucks man, like really" He sounded genuine and Jackie slowly realized he was trying to help, in his own odd way. He laughed, a watery giggle noise sounding more sad then happy. Anti paused, slightly concerned, before patting Jackie's back awkwardly. "It's um gonna be ok?" He tried, watching Jackie with slightly uncomfortable concern. The hero giggle cried for a little bit, letting out some of his emotions and finding Anti's presence actually helping with that. He claimed to just sniffling after a bit and glanced up at Anti who was still confused and a little concerned. "Thank you, for being here" He said quietly, rubbing at his eyes. "Oh uh sure yeah- just don't make a habit out of it hero" He said jokingly, trying to lighten the mood. Jackie laughed softly, a more genuine laugh. "No promises." He looked up at the sky with a small smile now, things were gonna be ok. He wasn't alone in this and didn't have to be. He watched the stars he hadn't noticed before, seeing a light in the dark of the sky made him feel hopeful. He stayed in Anti's company until ready to go back to the others.
