I woke up, startled. It was extremely uncomfortable on the bed, for some reason.
Shifting in my bed, something caught my eye. What was that?
A... spider leg? Growing on my back? I screamed. As my mother's footsteps thumped up the stairs, the spider leg vanished.
Was it my imagination?
"Rein, dear, what is it?" asked my mother breathlessly. I still gaped at where the spider leg had been.
"Momma, there... there was a spider leg. Growing out of my back."
My mother's eyes turned stern. "Rein, listen to me." She crouched down next to the bed where I sat.
"Do not tell anyone of this. Tell them this is your ability. Don't worry about ability gauges or anything- they'll still see this as an ability."
"But Momma, what happened? What was it?"
"Rein, you are an Arachnid. You must tell no one. They will hunt you down."
"Who?"
"The authorities. They will follow you to the ends of the earth, and they will find you. And when they do, they would slay you. In your eyes, you are a beast." My mother looked serious.
At that time, I didn't understand what was wrong. It was just my ability manifesting, right? I just had an arachnid ability. There was nothing wrong...
But there was everything wrong. My mother was right.
A year later, she died from a disease. And at that moment, the authorities found me. I was all alone, with the authorities on my trail, wanting nothing more than to kill me.
I was on the run for a long time. At schools, I didn't fit in. They all asked me what my ability was. I couldn't answer; I had sworn on my mother's grave.
They all found me weird. I thought I had found consolation at Agwin... but perhaps I was wrong.
