"Class, please settle down," said the teacher. "We have a few new students joining us this year, so I expect you all to set a good example. I know it's the first day of school, so we'll take it easy, but this is no excuse to slack off. After all, we are Agwin High, the second-best ranking high school."
Yeah, blah blah blah. Second. Hah. How long have they been trying to beat Wellston? Years? Decades?
I fiddled with my pencil and pushed gray hair out of my eyes. It would be best to lay low at the beginning of the Agwin year.
In this world, everyone has an ability. Now and then, there is a cripple with no ability. My species, which is similar to humans but actually part arachnid, has its perks as well. My ability, however, is the ability to read the emotions of those nearby.
My actual ability level is 3.2, but most gauges only gauge the arachnid power's level.
After a long lesson of Biology, the class was dismissed. I quickly packed my books into my bag and got up, aiming to leave the classroom early.
Someone blocked my path. Tch. It was Broven, the King of Agwin. I'm telling you, run for it. This can't be good.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Rein," I said, stepping to the right and walking past him, pushing open the door with my shoulder. Why, why, why did you have to tell him your name?
"What's your ability?" he shouted after me.
"You're bound to find out one day!" I answered, running down the hall. Nice going, Rein. You already shouted at the King on your first day.
As I was running, I bumped into someone.
"Outta my way," the boy growled. I sighed. "What do you think you're doing, new girl? It ain't good to run into people like me."
I arched an eyebrow. "...And may I ask what your ability level is?" I could feel haughtiness radiating from him.
"3.8. You hear that? That's above average."
I scoffed. Don't pick a fight with him, Rein. Not a good idea. I didn't listen. Boosting my strength with the arachnid "monster" inside me, I threw a hook at the boy's face.
A couple of minutes later, he was on the ground, begging for mercy. I scoffed again and left. A few people whispered as I went to get my notebooks from my locker.
Ugh, why did you pick a fight with him? I just want to sleep... Ugh. I hate this curse.
A few days later, Gou, the Jack of Agwin, approached me after school had ended.
"Broven wants to see you in the Royals Room. Follow me," said Gou.
What does that loser want now?
I nervously followed Gou to the Royals Room. He took out a fancy-looking key and stuffed it in the lock, then turned the handle of the door and entered.
Broven was inside, sitting on a desk.
"Come in, Rein."
What? You got invited into the Royals Room? Wow...
Hush. You're so talkative these days, Arachnid.
"Rein, Gou, I want you two to fight."
"WHAT?!"
Uuuuugh. Not once have I gotten a good sleep beca-
Didn't I tell you to hush? Maybe you'll get some sleep if you stop talking for once.
"On the battlegrounds, of course," said Broven simply. "I heard Rein is quite strong. You've gotten into quite a lot of scuffles since you joined this school, and you've made it out unscathed, Rein."
I groaned. I guess Agwin isn't too bad after all, I thought. If I could become Queen, there's a smaller chance I would wind up getting kicked out of the school and being chased by authorities.
Gou huffed. "Alissa isn't gonna give up her throne just because Rein beat me," he said.
"Well, yes," said Broven. "After all, she's a 5.0... What's your level, Rein?"
Don't tell hi-
Shush.
"4.9."
"Oh, not bad," said Broven, smiling.
"And what about you?" I asked him.
"Oh, I haven't told anyone yet," said Broven, smiling even more. "Anyway, let's see you fight."
Gou groaned.
"Oh, and Rein, if you show talent... Since Alissa isn't allowed to do Turf Wars since, well, the latest 'incident', I'll consider giving you the position of Queen fill-in."
