"My baby's fly like a jet stream, high above the whole scene, loves me like I'm brand new." - 'Call It What You Want' by Taylor Swift
Dixie gazed out the window, tuning out her content team's discussion about her upcoming music video for her remix of "Be Happy." She couldn't keep her mind focused on the important meeting when the rest of her life was up in flames.
Luckily news of her incident with Griffin never made it beyond their inner circle. Unluckily, what she had technically done was commit assault against him, thus leveling the playing field between their two indiscretions. Her dad wasn't able to take any legal action against Griffin for leaking her medical information when it would incriminate Dixie too. She had really messed up this one up by bringing a knife to a gun fight.
Dixie regretted every action she had taken since their break-up. She didn't know how Griffin had managed to always be one step ahead of her, but he had, and she had fallen right into his trap. She was constantly making the same mistakes with every bridge she had burned. "You never learn Dixie, what did you think would happen?" her dad had frustratedly scolded her. Another mistake to add to the list, she hated disappointing him.
With nothing stopping him, Griffin had been ramping up his efforts to ruin Dixie's reputation. She couldn't scroll on her For You Page without seeing some gross boy making a tik tok mocking how many guys she allegedly had gone through. The "You a hoe, you a hoe, you a hoe" sound constantly played out of her phone as images flashed on her screen with of her with her guy friends. Mind you none of the guys got shit for hanging out with her, the double standards weighed heavy on her heart. Her fictional body count had become a social media trend.
She wanted to call Griffin out so badly, but it never seemed to go her way when she did. He was making regular appearance on TikTokRoom these days with his comments on all the nasty videos of her claiming that there were two sides to every story. He had successfully weaponized the misogyny towards female creators against her and now no one cared about the 48 screenshots she had of legitimate proof of his crimes. It was much easier for the world to tear Dixie to shreds for not living up to their impossible standards.
He was the one who had cheated, he was the one who had publicly gotten caught, so why was she the one getting the backlash? She was sick of the liars calling her one. It had felt like her castle had crumbled overnight. Her crown of Tik Tok darling had been snatched away from her by jokers dressing up as kings. She wasn't playing the victim here; she actually was a victim of double standards.
"Dixie! You need to pick one of these guys!" Heidi's voice brought Dixie's attention back to the conversation. Right, a guy, Dixie thought as she scanned the list in front of her while biting her lip. She had to pick a love interest for a scene in her music video that she would have to kiss. She winced as read off her options.
Kio would attract the wrong kind of attention, he was close with Noah and Griffin. She feared Vinnie Hacker's legion of fan girls would leave her death threats if she made-out with him. She was pretty sure she was taller than Jacob Sartorius, so that was an automatic no. Dixie groaned as her nervous thoughts raced. Seriously who had made this list? Was there any way to do this scene without causing even more drama?
Her phone starting buzzing on the table. She glanced over at the screen and grinned when she saw it was Noah. The only thing that had remained consistent in her life recently, besides the hate comments on her posts, was Noah.
Dixie had boarded up the windows to herself after the storm that was her breakup with Griffin. Noah had locked himself in with her without question or doubt, just kindness and understanding. He didn't care about the drama queens taking swings at both of them these past few weeks as the whirlwind of rumors sucked him into the fold as well. Dixie's problems faded to nothing when she was looking at him.
