"Thank you," Castiel nodded. He reached out and grasped the hot mug of chocolate that Rita brought for him. He even graced a small smile at the marshmallow floating in that liquid. Since Sam and Dean had a solid case to busy themselves with, Castiel decided to stick around for a while and keep Rita company.
Her bad luck persisted out there, outside the bunker, much like his own issues and worries about God and Heaven. The break from their problems came with the scent of the drinks she prepared and was outlined with the movies or songs she'd teach him about.
"Let it cool a bit, alright?" Rita warned and took her seat, once more, next to Castiel, at that long table in the so-called living room. "Hot chocolate is the only drink I was allowed to make for the people I worked for."
"You don't work for me," Castiel frowned, ever so lightly, keeping one hand on the warm cup as with the other, he pointed towards Rita's chest, then paused. Him and Sam certainly did not expect to have Dean bring Rita back in the state she was into a few days ago.
"Are you sure your heart is alright?"
"I appreciate the worry, Castiel, but Sam patched me up and you healed the stitches," Rita took a sip from her own hot chocolate. Though she warned Castiel to let it cool down, she had no issue feeling some burn, knowing that really, nothing could hurt her enough to die anymore. It was a relief really to make sure she could still feel. "I'm fine."
"Rita...," Castiel sighed, uncertain of whether or not he could still ask anything on his mind, knowing of who she was really supposed to be and how humans were still such easy to offend creatures. "Can I ask you something?"
"Anything, angel," she smiled back.
The certainty of her answer was the only reason Cas wasn't thrown off, as it happened often, considering his doubtful demeanour. "Have you made a decision about what you will do with knowing you were Reality?"
"I'm not Reality," Rita took a deep breath.
Losing her heart a bit, her talk with Dean, everything added up nicely over a conclusion that has been haunting her thoughts for a while. "And really, I don't want to be a part of any of that drama, even if I can remember Chuck."
"I...," Castiel seemed disappointed, but with every ounce of decency, he covered it up by looking at his hot chocolate. "I understand."
"At least you will get to meet your Father though, good for you," Rita let her smile linger on her lips. "One of us gotta live that dream, after all."
"You get to be human too, how do you feel about that?" Castiel tilted his head. Both of them knew Rita's mind trailed away to Dean.
At first, she blamed it all on the fact that he was truly the first one to show interest in any way. But the longer they continued staying in each other's presence, the stronger that need in her chest got. It was the need to explore a side of her she has never given a second thought before: love.
And not the caring, innocent love she had for all the old people she worked with, but more of a romantic urge that yearned to hold his hand more often and wear his shirt again.
On cue with her loss of words, Sam and Dean returned to the bunker, however, not exactly alone. Sam had Rowena cuffed, pushing her down the stairs.
Rita was standing in a second and Castiel right beside her, caught her shoulder to hold her back from trying to fight a witch. "You found her?" the angel inquired, struggling, in the slightest, to keep Rita there.
"Wait," Rowena's eyes stopped on Rita, confused. The witch looked back at Sam, "How is the girl still alive?"
"Dean, I changed my mind," Rita announced as Dean was the first to approach and drop his back on the table, taking her cup and smelling it. Once he discovered it was hot chocolate, he put it back down with a frown and faced the wrath of the tiny woman.
