The building creaked, feeling as old as it looked. The inside was slightly cleaner than the outside, but some trash was still strewn about, just waiting to be collected. The headlights of a car shined through the glass doors, before turning off and leaving the person driving in the growing dark.
Earlier that day, he had been interviewed by the current day guard, Ander, about the night shift. Apparently, he was going to have a partner on the nightshift, a non-binary kid he knew from high school named CJ. He couldn't remember if CJ was biologically female or male, but that didn't really matter to him all that much.
Leaving his car, he looked at the other one parked just a little ways away. He couldn't define the figure, but he knew one thing. That no random person would be at a closed restaurant at midnight.
"Who's there?" he asked, stepping just a little bit closer. The figure jumped, being caught off guard by the sudden voice reaching their ears. They turned to see him walking over slowly before responding,
"What the- Don't you dare do that again!" the figure growled, leaning into the light from the nearby streetlamp. He was slightly shocked by the now visible figure.
"Me! You're the one who's lurking in the darkness like a serial killer!" Drew responded, rolling his eyes. Both of them then recalled they had a job to do.
Leaving the cars and heading inside, they took a second to look around the building. It was a pizzeria and some of the tablecloths were slightly stained with marinara sauce. CJ caught sight of the main stage, upon which sat four robotic animals. Drew noticed the curtains that surrounded another stage off to the right. He shifted, debating whether or not to check behind them.
The clock struck twelve as he was stuck on that decision. Drew decided which was best and headed for wherever the office was, practically dragging CJ along with him.
CJ only hisses at Drew while being dragged.
"Oh shut it," he responded, finally letting them go as he reached the office.
The office was relatively sparse, aside from a desk, a couple of chairs, a few monitors, and a tablet. CJ perked up and immediately reached for it, Drew grabbing it about a second before the small human could get it.
"Give it to me," CJ begged.
"No, the boss told me specifically that I was the one to be on monitors AND the tablet tonight!" Drew replied, going to sit down.
"Fine," CJ muttered, sitting in one of the chairs. They waited as Drew got closer to the other, and just as he was about to sit, swiped their foot against it, knocking from under him and leaving him on the floor.
Drew looked at CJ from the floor. "I guess I'll just sit on the floor then," He said as he looked into the tablet.
After a minute of silence, the desk phone started to ring. Drew glared up at CJ, silently telling them to answer. After a couple of rings, CJ reluctantly picked it up.
"Hello? Hello, hello?" came a voice from the other side.
"What do you want?" they answered, annoyance sounding in their voice.
"Well! Good to see I didn't have to leave a recording! Welcome to your first night here at Jade's. Uhm, since you're new, I kind of have to read this legal statement for you," the voice muttered, papers rustling through the static of his voice. "I'm Finn, by the way."
"I'm sorry. Legal statement?" Drew said as he looked up from the tablet. He could hear the papers being set down.
"Yeah. It's just a normal thing we have to do. Did the dude who hired you not tell you about it or something?" Finn asked over the crackling static.
"Uh, yeah no," CJ replied, shooting a glance at Drew.
"Okay. Anyway, here we go. Welcome to Jade's Pizza, a magical place for kids and grown-ups alike, where fantasy and fun come to life. Blah blah blah. Upon discovering that damage or death has occurred, a missing person report will be filed within 90 days or until the property has been cleaned and bleached and the carpets have been replaced. It's a whole thing, you know."
"No kidding..." Drew said as he slowly looked back into the tablet trying to forget about what the guy over the phone just said.
CJ merely muttered a "are you kidding me" under their breath. The static crackled a bit before Finn started back up.
"So, the animatronics can be a bit... quirky at night. They were in free-roaming mode some time ago. But that had to be stopped after the Bite of '87. Man, can you believe that a human could survive without their frontal lobe? It's crazy."
"You know I really didn't need to hear that," CJ said. After a little longer of talking, Finn ended his call and hung up, leaving CJ and Drew alone with the animatronics for four more hours.
The pizzeria was quiet, though the creaking of the settling building left Drew uneasy. It didn't help that the camera footage was grainy and sometimes cut out. And CJ wasn't much help either, trying to get him to go out and investigate every little noise.
Drew was busy listening to CJ grumble about why the place needed a nightguard, let alone two when a glitching sound came from the cameras. Checking the tablet, he found one of the animatronics was missing from the stage.
"Uh... CJ, why is there an animatronic missing??"
CJ glanced at the tablet, before snatching it from him. "Frick."
They finally found it, standing near the kitchen doors unmoving. It was a jaguar, and it finally reached them that the sounds they had been hearing was singing.
Drew looked over CJ's shoulder. "Why is she there!!! The animatronics aren't supposed to move around, are they?!" Drew gained a panicked expression and started pacing around the room. The cameras glitched, leaving all the feed down.
"I think we should probably lock the doors," CJ mentioned, watching Drew smack the tablet's screen.
Drew immediately went to each of the doors and quickly pushed the button to lock them. "Now we should be safe. I hope..."
After a few minutes of masculine panic, CJ and Drew heard the clock sound at 6 AM. Relieved to finally be free for the night, they both hurried out of the building and said their goodbyes before leaving for their homes.
