WITH ONLY SEVEN DAYS UNTIL THE SOLSTICE, THE TRAIN FINALLY PULLED INTO DENVER.

Despite her insistence on it, the others had refused to let Olivia pay for food. So they survived on the granola bars and snacks buried deep within her bag. They hadn't bathed since they left camp, and while it wasn't as strong as Olivia thought it would've been, it was noticeable if you stood too close. And to be honest, Percy smelt the worst of all from his dip in the Mississippi River.

"Let's try to contact Chiron," Annabeth said. "I want to tell him about your talk with the river spirit."

"We can't use phones, right?" Percy asked. Olivia looked away and hoped no one paid her any attention.

"I'm not talking about phones," Annabeth said.

They wandered through downtown for about half an hour, the air dry and hot, sharply contrasting the humidity of St. Louis. Olivia wished she'd taken up her mom's offer to get her hair braided before going to camp because the weather was not in her favor. Eventually, they stumbled into an empty DIY car wash. They made beelines toward the stall farthest from the street, looking out for patrol cars.

"What exactly are we doing?" Percy asked, watching Grover take out the spray gun.

"It's seventy-five cents," he grumbled. "I've only got two quarters left. Annabeth?"

"Don't look at me," she said. "The dining car wiped me out."

Olivia went through her spare change and tossed Grover a quarter.

"Thanks, Liv," he said. He wandered off to the machine. "We could do it with a spray bottle, of course, but the connection isn't as good, and my arm gets tired of pumping."

"What are you talking about?" Percy asked.

Grover fed in the quarters and set the knob to FINE MIST. "I-M'ing."

"Instant messaging?" Percy asked.

"No," Olivia said gently. "Iris-messaging. The rainbow goddess carries messages for the gods. If you ask right, she'll do the same for you."

"You summon the goddess with a spray gun?" Percy asked.

Olivia's hands lit up with light. "What other ways do you know to make a rainbow?"

She targeted a sharp beam of light through the vapor, smiling when it broke out into colors.

Annabeth nudged Percy. "Quick, give Olivia your drachma," she said. "The chances of the gods listening to her are a lot better."
