The next day, Claire heard a knocking at her door. It was Chris.
"Hi Claire, can I come in?"
Claire looked at him with an annoyed expression in her face
"Yes, whatever" she answered with an indifferent tone.
Her apartment was a mess, as simple as that.
"So, I came here to talk you about Darren.. He was really sad last night because of the fight you had." Chris said, avoiding eye contact.
"Oh yes.. So are you going to tell me he's finally coming out?" She asked him with sneer.
"What are you talking about? He is not coming out, he loves you!" He said. Claire always managed to get on his nerves.
"No he doesn't! He is just pretending, i'm his beard.. Did you know we haven't kissed in 2 months? And when we did, he was so.. Distant " Claire said, with a confused expression, as if she had just realized that.
"I was not aware of that.. But maybe that was because you guys are having lots of discussions, but he is happy with you." He answered, with a soft, hopeless voice.
"Have you seen the way he looks at you? He has never seen me that way, or anyone.. And I know you are madly in love with him too.. You just don't have the balls to admit it."
Chris was speechless, she was completely right about him..
"Well you know what Claire? You are wrong! He is just my best friend, and I do love him, but as a friend.. I don't know why is it so hard for you to understand." Chris answered, upset and trying to contain the tears.
"Okay, let's suppose that is true, I'm still not going back with Darren. Now can you please go? I'm really busy." Claire lied.
"Fine" Chris said, standing up, grabbing his coat and getting out of the apartment without saying a word.
As soon as Chris closed the door, Claire started crying. She knew Darren had feelings for him, but she hadn't realize it until now.. She felt like she wasted 3 years of her life by being a beard; but she loved him so much.
