It was a quarter past one, and Kayla was sitting outside a coffee shop. She was quietly drinking an iced mocha latte, a drink she barley gets, reading TIME magazine. She looked around; not many people were outside today: a few teenagers walking to the mall or to different shops, several coples holding hands and talking about what their going to eat for dinner, and relatives trying to figure out where their going to eat lunch at. Kayla sipped her drink. Today was Valentine's Day, the one day of the year that lovers show their affection as if they haven't already. She was single, and proud of it. That meant she was independent, she could be herself without doubts or regrets.
Kayla closed the magazine and sticking it into her brown leather purse, standing up, and walking to the nearest trash can. She through her drink away, walking off to go where ever she felt like it.
The sun was glaring with intensity. She opened the flap of her purse, digging out her dark sunglasses, putting the on. Kayla pushed up nose of the glasses, and flipped her light brown, straight, long hair out of her face.
She started to hear something from underneath her. Kayla started to slow down a bit. The sound was not familiar to her. It sounded like a garbage truck, a tuba, and a low gurgle sound.
A slime monster busted through the sewage pipes, knocking the manhole cover and debris into the air. Kayla stopped in her tracks, looking up at the monster, with its dark green and brown slimy skin glissing in the sun. It was large, having no appendages what so ever, with its large, red eye looking at the bystanders. It squealed, showing its rows of teeth. Kayla looked around, seeing a nearby store. She dashed into it, curling up beside the door in a ball.
She heard screams coming from outside. She could hear the monster squeal out as if it was in pain. Then, all at once, the screams stopped. Kayla waited for a minute. From the window a foot away, a flash came through. She lifted her sunglasses off her eyes, leaning towards the window about three inches off the ground to see a man dressed in black, taking off his sunglasses, talking to the group of people that were just earlier screaming. The monster was no where to be seen, but the hole couldn't be missed.
Kayla stood up, placing her glasses back over her eyes, and stepped out of the door. The man started back to a black car. A black man dressed the exact same way as the other one appeared on the passenger side. He was just now taking off his sunglasses. He caught a glance of Kayla.
She bit the inside of her lip as she maneuvered through the rubble the monster made. Whatever it was, it went away as quickly as it came. Kayla moved her purse as she started for thirty-seventh street. She walked on the side walk, very few cars passing her. Kayla watched her feet as if they were the most important thing right now.
Kayla heard a car pull up beside her, keeping pace with her. She took a slow breath, letting it go quickly. She looked over at the car. It was the same one from the previous street. It had slightly tinted windows, but she could see the two men from just a few minutes before in the car.
The car pulled to the curb, stopping. She stood in place, pushing her glasses onto her head, as one of the men, the African American, got out. "Hello miss, I'm Agent Jay. I'd like to ask you a few questions." He stepped onto the sidewalk.
"Okay. Are you asking 'bout that thing that came outta the sewer? Cause I'd like to ask some questions to you." Kayla retorted, raising an eyebrow.
"Uh, yes, I'm asking 'bout that thing. What... did you see exactly?" He raised his eyebrow, cocking his head slightly to the side.
"I saw a worm-like thing come out of the ground. Then I saw you guys." She answered.
"Okay." He reached into his jacket pocket, retrieving a slim device form his pocket.
Kayla stepped back. "What's that?"
"It'll make you forget what ever happened." He pulled out a pair of sunglasses out of his shirt pcket, putting them on his face.
She quickly put hers on, squinting underneath them. Jay made the device flash. "What you saw was a state of emergency test. Go back to your house and watch some Looney Tunes." He said this as he was taking off his glasses.
"Looney Tunes? State of emergency test? Bull crap." Kayla pushed her glasses back onto her head.
Jay but his lip, looking at the ground then her. "Your glasses are really dark aren't they?"
"Yeap. Got some more in my purse and at home." She shrugged her shoulders.
He turned around, thumbing towards her. The other man opened his door, stepping out of it, and came over to the two. He put his glasses on, taking out the same device. "Miss, can you look right here?" He pointed at the device.
She closed her eyes, knowing he would try to flash her with the weird object. Kayla opened her eyes. "Wow, great parlor trick." She gave a brief smile.
Jay and the man looked at each other. They turned away from Kayla. They talked lowly. Kayla rolled her eyes.
"I swear Kay, she was there." She heard Jay say.
"I didn't see her." Kay retorted shrugging a little.
"Maybe she's one of those aliens that has camouflage powers or something."
"Excuse me, you with the face, yeah, I ain't no alien. You all are just crazy." Kayla smiled jokingly turning around to start down the street.
One of them grabs her shoulder, turning her around. "What?" Kayla furrows her brows and jerks her shoulder away.
Jay motioned towards the car."Can you come with us?"
Kayla looked at the other man. "Your name must be 'PB'. You know, Agent PB and Agent Jay."
Kayla sat in the seat behind Jay as Kay drove. She watched as the world passed by out the window. She looked at the men in front. "You all look like your apart of the government. What department are you?"
"We're not apart of any government department." Kay answered.
"Not FBI, CIA, um... or some new department?" Kayla asked again.
"Nope." Jay answered.
Kayla looked at her hands, then back at the window. She looked back at the men. "What or who do you work for then?"
"The Men In Black, or the MIB for short." Jay glanced back at Kayla.
"Don't they deal with aliens?" She cocked her head to the side. "Oh, are there all kinds of aliens? If so... How many?"
"Yes, sweetheart, we do deal with aliens, and there are all kinds of aliens, now shut it." Kay didn't even glance back at Kayla.
Kayla huffed and looked out the window. "Did someone piss in your Cheerios?" She mumbled mostly to herself.
