In the beginning, everything was fine. Or it seemed like it.

I felt trapped often. My brother, Eren, seemed to as well. We both wanted to go see the outside world. We both seemed to hate the walls.

On the other hand, even though we both wanted to leave the walls, he actually wanted to join the scouts. I was somewhat fine with staying in the walls if it meant safety. Still, I would leave if I had to to protect my brother. Mikasa and I both would.

I had gone out to gather firewood with Mikasa and Eren. Eren dozed off under a tree while Mikasa and I worked.

Finally, Eren woke. Mikasa and I were sitting next to each other, waiting.

"Mikasa...y/n...hey..." He muttered.

"We should get back." I said.

"Where are we, exactly?" Eren asked.

"Try asking again when you're awake." Mikasa said.

"I'm up. I-I just...I dont know. Its like the dream I was having went on forever." He said, sitting up. "Its gone now...what was it about...?"

Mikasa and I grabbed the things of firewood that we had gathered. I looked at my brother.

"Eren have you been crying?" I asked.

We walked back to the town.

"Do me a favor, huh?" Eren said eventually. "Dont let anyone know I was crying.

"Yeah yeah yeah." Mikasa and I said.

"Still though. You don't even remember why?" She asked. "Might wanna have your dad look into that."

"Right cuz tearing up is usually a medical thing." Eren said.

"Somebody messing with you?" Another voice asked.

"Oh. Hey Mr. Hannes." I said. Hannes ignored me and continued talking to Eren. I huffed. "Ugh. You smell like a tavern." I added, trying not to gag.

Behind Hannes, his buddies laughed. They were obviously drunk.

"You kids up for a swig?" He asked.

The audacity. Asking kids if they want alcohol. I thought, crossing my arms.

"Arent you on watch?" Eren asked.

"Yup! Watching the old gateway. Thirsty work playing sentry. Pinochle will only go so far to chase off the boredom. Little nip now and then keeps us all in our courage. Perks of being a guard." Hannes said.

"Ugh. Cowards. If you're drunk, you wouldn't be able to defend the town if the titans manage to get through the wall." I said, slightly irritated.

"My sister is right. How do you expect a fight if you're so loose on your feet?" Eren asked.

"Huh? Now why on earth would I have to fight?" Hannes asked.

"Why do you think?!" Eren and I asked.

"What if they break through the walls?" I asked.

"We'd be sitting ducks on your watch!" Eren added.

"Eren, y/n, kids." Hannes said.

"Kid?!" I asked, slightly offended.

"Please. Use your inside voice." Hannes continued. One of his buddies chuckled and came over.

"The doc's kids have some fire in them." The person said. "Listen the only thing they've done to the wall in the past hundred years is scratch at it. I have a feeling if they get it in their heads to do something else, we'll be more than ready for them."
