I talked to Jean until the sun came up, after hearing me yawn he offered to walk me back to my cabin.
We walked back in silence, complete silence, comfortable silence.
I was trying to avoid looking at him, I felt like if I did it would ruin the moment we had just shared, but every now and then I would catch him looking at me from the corner of my eye. Every time my head moved a little bit to look in his direction to meet his gaze, he would look away, embarrassed. It was adorable.
Once we got back to my cabin I stretched out my arm to shake his hand but decided to give him a hug instead. He froze, surprised, and hugged me back, tightly and softly at the same time.
We weren't just acquaintances anymore, we were friends.
We said our goodbyes, I opened the door and walked in, and closed it. My back against the door, I slid down to the ground slowly, smiling thinking about the conversation we had.
All of a sudden the lamp on the nightstand was flicked on, I was brought back to reality by a disappointed Mikasa sitting on a chair, legs crossed, as if she was my mom mad at me for missing curfew.
"Where have you been Y/N?"
"Since when do you sit like that?" I teased.
While uncrossing her legs she asked me,
"Y/N you realize that not being in the cabin at the specific time will get you in trouble, right?"
"Mikasa, the punishment would have been running laps. It's not like much would have changed if I got in trouble or not. Honestly, I could use those extra laps. Who knows they might help me get to your level",
I wasn't taking this conversation seriously. Mikasa was someone who lived by rules and wouldn't break them unless necessary. She tried to get my brain to work the same way a couple of times, she failed.
She laughed, " Seriously though, where were you Y/N?"
"I was talking with Jean at the lake",
I had already told Mikasa about how Jean was avoiding me, her only piece of advice was to let him come to his senses and see the wrong in his actions.
It's funny because that's the exact answer I expected from her when I first told her about him ignoring me.
Typical.
"Jean? Kirstein? Since when were you guys on good terms?"
"Since last night, I saw him at the lake, he cleared up some things for me, and we talked until now, we're friends",
Mikasa looked confused but accepted the situation.
" See? You let him come to his senses and he was able to see the wrong in his actions ."
" Well actually..."
I didn't want to say that I was basically the one who provoked an apology.
She would have lectured me about the importance of "being patient" and "trying to understand where people were coming from", or some other "being a good person shit".
"...nevermind," I said, getting up, carefully taking off my shoes, and slipping into bed.
Mikasa turned off the flickering light, got up from the chair, and made her way into her bed as well, with a satisfied look on her face as if she had finally won me over with her good person mind tricks.
After a few minutes of staring up at the ceiling, I felt bad and realized that I couldn't lie to her,
"I went to him", I blurted out, feeling guilty. When I received no response I concluded that Mikasa was asleep, relieved, I let out a quiet sigh and wrapped myself in my blanket.
The room was silent.
"We're talking about this when the time is right Y/N"
I was literally shitting bricks.
