Time To Face The Music

The whole space was suddenly consumed by horrid coldness, hopelessness and bleakness. Lily, still sitting on Severus’ bed, put her arms around him and pulled him closer to her chest. Why else would dementors be there if not to take Severus to Azkaban or worse… to suck his soul out?

Severus’s eyes were glaring in their direction, moving from the dementor to Dumbledore and Fudge and back. Lily could feel his muscles tense up under her arms. His heart rate went up, too. He was frightened but his face remained unchanged.

Madame Pomfrey approached them in quick, resolute steps and with a wand in her hand.

“This is the hospital wing, not a place for a dementor to wander around,” she told them angrily. Dumbledore looked angry at the situation, as well. Fudge, however, looked her straight in the eye and said: “It is also not a place to heal death eaters.”

“This death eater has saved this young lady’s life!”

“Yes,” Fudge nodded. “And now it's time he face the music. A death eater who saved a life is, after all, still the same death eater who took many other lives.”

“Albus,” she turned to the headmaster and threw up her hands. But all he answered was: “There is nothing I can do, Poppy. It is the law.”

The dementor was slowly approaching Severus’s bed. Lily started to shiver with cold and held him even tighter.

She looked at Albus with a plea in her eyes. He looked back at her but his face gave her no hope. Fudge came closer to the bed. Severus pushed Lily away and stood up, glaring at the minister, awaiting his words.

“Severus Snape,” Fudge said once he was close enough, “your trial begins in seven days. It is my duty to ensure your inability to escape the trial by taking you to Azkaban, where you, I hope, will stay for the rest of your life.”

“No,” Lily exclaimed and got up, too.

“I’m afraid I have no other choice.”

“If, of course,” Moody chuckled, “you don’t prefer he be given a dementor’s kiss.”

Severus went much paler than usual and he stared at the dementor, petrified with fear.

“Well then,” Moody continued, “Say good-bye to Mrs Potter and off we go.”

Severus didn’t say good bye. Instead, he smiled at her painfully and whispered:

“It’s time I face the music.”

He nodded at the headmaster and walked over to Moody, who gave him magically enhanced handcuffs. Shortly after that, they left. Only Albus and Poppy stayed in the room with Lily, who was now crying her eyes out.

“He will d-die there,” she said.

Albus put his hand on her shoulder. “He will not. I have a plan. I’m going to win the trial but you do have to help me.”
