"Well, and where do you think you're going?"
"I need to get some air," she says while her eyes are jumping from one object to another, finding no rest and giving me no rest too.
I cross my arms over my chest: I don't like that I'm not touching Marina anymore, "Juni, we are already in the forest! It's plenty of air here!"
"Juni, don't be silly. You've nothing to do with these dryads. You are not one of them, and you understand it perfectly well. What keeps you there? Let it go; let it gooo!" I'm supported by Alex, who looks tired as hell but still tries to joke by humming like Idina Menzel. "Here's a rune! Come on, you act like a v..." I know exactly what he wanted to say, but he stopped abruptly this time.
"We have an important book. We can't take risks and hang around here so close to dyads' Boarder! Look at Marina! She's frozen; I don't want her to get sick because of you and your stupid stubbornness. The girl doesn't deserve all this. We are going back with you or without you." I'm starting to get a little peeved.
"Doris, don't be so tough on her." My sweet Marina, of course, decided to stand up for the damn dryad.
Juni's eye contact indicates coldness. She looks like an old ocean's rock, "How long have you known her? How long have you known this human girl, Doris? A day or two, maybe?" Juni grips the broom like it's her spear, and she's ready to stab me with it as if it was I who dragged her to the Library. "I've actually known you my entire life, and I have always been with you; I have always supported your strange affairs with humans! How did they all end? Uh? I can remind you!" she is almost screaming. "They hated you for who you are; one of them even tried to kill you. But I was always with you, watching you and your bright khm... let's call it love life. But when I lost my dryad family, my clan, you suddenly turn to your Marina. Poor thing, what if she catches a cold!"
It was so unfair, so mean! She knew I've never been with human women before Marina, and I haven't slept with their males since that terrible night. Stupid dryad knows for sure how much I care for my coin girl. I clench my fists, but Marina puts her soft palm over mine. For a few minutes Juni and I are making holes in each other with our eyes, then Juni nervously turns her flexible back to me and is about to leave. The broom is still clenched in her sinewy strong arms.
"I'm asking you to do something, please!" Marina wraps my waist. "She shouldn't go off alone! Can't you see how upset she is?" My human looks at me with her pleading, blue eyes that have become so dear, so homelike to me. She is like my conscience; she is what makes me kinder and more patient. I touch her soft cheek and nod.
Alex makes a strange sound. At first, I think he grins at my unusual tenderness, "What do you want now, witcher?" I reluctantly turn to him, and a cold sweat breaks through my body.
"Whose child is this? Where are his parents?" asks Marina with concern. "Are you lost, little guy?"
Alex makes that gruntingly sobbing sound again that makes me feel worse. Juni is the first to get herself together and hit the little bitch in its chest with the sharp side of our broomstick. Marina gasps in horror, not understanding what is happening, and I'm simply ready to burst into bitter tears, since I have no idea how we'll get out of here alive.
