I woke up at around 7am, ready to start the day and make my coffee. I was getting ready for another day in the office when I remembered I wasn't going in today. Shane and I were driving down to Utah to film the new episode of Buzzfeed Unsolved tomorrow. I texted Shane to see if he was awake yet while drinking my first cup of coffee.

7:04am Ryan: Get up, big guy

I went to get ready in the bathroom, shaving my face and brushing my teeth. After cleaning myself up, I went back into my bedroom and checked over my stuff again. I packed enough clothes for a few days because I figured we'd make a trip out of it, explore the local area before doing the investigation. I checked over my camera and hunting equipment, making sure all the batteries were charged and everything was working well before packing that up as well. I had a backpack with my clothes and a larger duffel bag for all my filming gear and equipment. I loaded the bags into the back of my truck. By now, it was almost 8am. Shane and I had agreed to meet up at 9, so I still had a little over an hour. I went back inside and sat down.

I felt a tug in my stomach that I knew meant I was hungry, but I knew I didn't have enough room for food with all the butterflies flying around. I always got so nervous before ghost investigations, and the only thing that kept me from losing it was knowing I had Shane by my side. I hated when he would engage with and taunt the spirits of the place we were investigating because that's exactly the type of sh!t Father Thomas told us not to do before our first investigation together. Of course, I knew Shane didn't believe in ghosts or demons. He thought it was just a bunch of hogwash, and the highs of our nights for him are watching me freak out and go insane. It scares me how much he seems to want us to die, and I know that one day if he doesn't stop, we're gonna get killed or possessed or something. I'm just not looking forward to that day...and who knows? That day might be today. As much as he gets on my nerves sometimes with his bullsh!t, I can't deny how close we are. He's one of my closest friends, and he definitely makes me feel a lot better during our investigations.

8:16am Shane: i'm awake. you ready for frisco? it's ghoul hunting time, baby! 👻

How can he be so excited when we could be driving our way into our graves? I shook my head and closed my eyes, pressing my fingers to my temples. I try not to think about what could happen tomorrow, because it wouldn't be productive to just sit around worrying for the next 36 hours. Instead, I pulled out my phone and checked social media. I looked around Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, watching videos and looking at my friends' posts. It helped to distract me and I started to feel a bit better. I even let out a few laughs at my friends' silly posts. However, time quickly slipped by and soon enough, it was 8:45 and my alarm was going off reminding me to pick up Shane. I took a deep breath and went outside to my truck. I buckled my seatbelt, and as I started to pull out of the driveway, I gave myself a pep talk.

"Okay, Ryan. You can do this. It's just another investigation, right? You've done so many of these and you've been fine every time. You just psych yourself out and worry yourself, but everything ends up being fine. Remember what Father Thomas said: 'Do not be afraid'. You want to do this. You applied for Unsolved and helped create the idea for the channel. Just...do not be afraid." I continued to repeat this and similar things to myself as I drove to Shane's apartment. Eventually, I reached Shane's apartment and found him sitting on his porch, waiting for me. He looked up as he heard the sound of my truck pulling up. I saw him smile and nod at me as the rubber on my tires puckered on the asphalt of Shane's driveway. I waved with my last three fingers while my thumb and pointer fingers stayed on the steering wheel. Shane opened the passenger door and climbed into my truck. He had to adjust the seat to slide it back a bit to make room for his extremely long legs. Once he finished adjusting the seat and had buckled the seatbelt, he turned to me with a smile.
