Meredith Grey refused to eat. She was slowly declining again and no one seemed to be able to shake her from her depressed state. She wouldn't eat or drink. She didn't want to talk to anyone to the point where people were begining to seriously worry. One afternoon, she was laying down on her side hugging a pillow. She had dark circles under her eyes that were red and puffy. She mustn't have slept or she was crying. Cormac walked in with 2 styrofoam boxes.
Meredith must not have noticed his presence because her eyes were still closed. He decided to sit down. He opened one of the boxes and started to eat some of his french fries.
Meredith turned around noticing the noise. "When did you get here?" her brows furrow.
"Im eating lunch." he shrugged.
"Im not hungry, Hayes" she said noticing the other box.
"Who says I got you food?" he smirks.
She chuckles. "Oh yeah, and whos might that be then?" she asked.
That was the first smile he had heard from her all week. He had to fight back the smile and keep up the act. "Well can't a bloke eat?"
"I still don't believe you." she sighed sitting up a little bit to turn her face towards him.
"Oh well, guess you'll have to check then, " he shrugged.
Smirking Meredith turned towards the box. "May I?"
"You might as well Grey, " he said pushing it towards her checking her.
She opened it up and ate a french fry. "Your really gonna eat all of this?"
"Maybe" he said chuckling.
She began to eat another french fry. At least she was finally eating something he thought. "Did you have any cool surgeries today?" she asked him.
"I had a pylomyrotomy on a 3 week old. And I have to check on Lunas stats but besides that my day has been light." he says.
"How are you're kids handling everything?" he asked her. She smiled. It wasn't often that somebody would think about her kids or how they're coping with everything but as a single parent, Hayes did.
"Theyre doing okay now. Zola, she was so scared. She kept saying how she didn't think id wake up because Derek never did and now they're doing classes over zoom and it's complete chaos. I wouldn't be surprised if my house was torn down now with everything that's going on." she chuckled.
"How are you're boys?" She asked, taking a bite of her cheeseburger.
"I miss 'em like it's crazy. Haven't seen them in almost 2 months. I try and face time 'em but it's been real busy." he says. "Liam has his SATs coming up soon. I feel terrible that I can't be there with him to help him study. He's an honors student, brilliant mind really. Gets it from Abigail he does." he shakes his laughing. "But were from the U.K., we know European History. In order for him to pass he needs to know all this American History. I can't even help cause I'm rubbish at it."
he laughed.Meredith laughed. His accent got deeper when he was talking about his home town.
"Do you miss it? Ireland?" She asked.
"Oh yeah, everyday. I used to live in Maum, in Galway. We had this huge land surrounded by stoned terraces with a view of the Maumturk mountains. It was beautiful. Especially at sunset. My ma would often catch me sneaking out just to watch it." he nodded enthusiastically.
"Did you know I went to Europe after high school? Traveled through Paris, Italy, England. I never did make it to Ireland though. My mom got sick soon after my trip and I had to put her in a home." She said.
"Its an amazing place. People only really know it for the pubs and it's independence day but it's so much more." He said. By now they were well done their meal and we're just talking. Meredith was looking a lot better. More alive and enthusiastic. "At least he had helped a bit." he thought.
Cormac stood up. He picked his box up.
"Are you finished eating?" he asked her.
"Yes thank you. You didn't have to do that you know." she smiled.
"You needed to eat Grey. You just took me up on the offer" he smirked throwing both boxes in the trash and sitting back down. He decided to grab the book that was on her bedside.
"Whats this? He asked flipping through the first few pages.
"My mothers journal." she replied. He instantly put it back down.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to invade your privacy."
She smiled. She found him a true gentlemen. He didn't want to intrude. "You can look at it if you'd like. It's a good read." she joked.
He sat back down edging his chair closer to the bed. He picked up the journal and read the first page. He chuckled.
He continued to read laughing at little things here and there. She smiled. He seemed to be truly relaxed. A small smile graced his lips. She wanted to reach for his hand but knew it would be overstepping. Instead she just watched him. Her eyes sparkling, she felt at peace. For the first time in a while she actually felt joy. A rare occurrence these days.
He looked up from the journal. "You know, you should get some sleep Grey." He smiled.
"I'm not tired though," she whined. She knew it was childish but she did it anyway. "Will you stay then?" She asked.
"Will you actually go to sleep?" He asked her.
"Guess I don't really have a choice do I?" she smiled softly.
He chuckled. "Ill stay until you fall asleep or I'm paged. Okay?" he agreed.
"Will you read it to me?" she asked gesturing to the journal in his hands.
"Sure" he smiled softly.
"A surgery can fail for any number of reasons." he started. Meredith readjusted herself so that she was now laying down on her side facing him.
"Whether from a patients morbidity, or surgeons ineptitude. An unprepared scrub nurse can make all the difference in the outcome of a procedure." he looked up to see her smiling.
His thick Irish accent was deeper and it was very calming to Meredith. She closed her eyes.
"You never know what you might miss. Whether it be exhaustion or you simply forgot a minor detail." he paused for a moment.
Meredith had her eyes closed. She looked so calm. Her blond hair laying spread out over her face. She looked so at ease.
"You stopped." she mumbled without opening her eyes.
"Sorry" he mumbled.
He continued to read until his pager went off. He went to check his phone. It was 21:52. (9:52 pm) He found himself smiling at himself. She was asleep. "Good night Grey" he said before going to check up on another patient.
