Eugene was sitting in bed silently, soft music playing around him as he looked back at his body, lying on the bed with a little white flower hanging just past his lips. He didn't remember what brought him here, why he was sitting there thinking of Boss of all ghosts as Can' Help Falling In Love played softly in the background. But no matter what brought him here, every thought of his superior made his heart skip and jump, and soon he singing along with the wards and staring up at his ceiling, one hand over his heart.
He smiled a bit as the song looped, letting a sense of calmness wash over him as he finally let it sink in that he loved Boss. The thought was a comfort, to know he was right, but stressful if he thought about trying to tell anyone of his feelings. Anyone who was a ghost, at least. Maybe Luke could help. Of course!
He jumped up and flew off to Luke's house. He didn't want to wait, and it was late, so seeing him in a dream would certainly work. He drifted into his friend's window and looked over to the bubble over his head, Luke and Kitty, sitting and playing happily. He knew this had been his dream every night since he had helped him. He slowly floated into his dream, grabbing Luke's attention with a wave, the song still drifting around in his head.
"Luke, I needed your help." He smiled softly, nervously, his eyes bright and his smile sweet as he moved to sit beside his best friend to play with the cat as they talked.
"And it was urgent, I assume?" Luke chuckled in response, leaning back and handing the kitten over to Eugene to hold and play with.
"Well, yeah... I need some advice. It's a little hard to explain, but... There's someone that won' t get out of my head. I know I love him, but...I don't know how I would tell him. I'm scared... What if he rejects me and I ruin our relationship?"
"Oh, you're talking about your boss, right?" Luke grinned, reaching over to pet Kitty, his expression knowing.
"Wait, how did you know?!"
"You talk about him a lot, you know. And when you do, your eyes get all bright and happy, more than I usually see them. Sometimes when I ask about him you get all flustered, too."
"A-And you never thought to tell me?!" He gasped, his eyes going wide as saucers and face red as a rose.
"Well, he seems accepting. I'm sure if I met him, I could give you a better idea as to how he might respond. Can you bring him here?"
"I... M-Maybe..."
"Perfect! I'll be waiting here with Kitty!" He grinned, poking his friend in the chest. "Calm down, okay? I doubt your precious heart would ever lead you in the wrong direction."
Eugene nodded a bit and stood, giving Luke his kitten back and waving farewell as he flew off to get his superior.
He drifted slowly and cautiously into the office, greeting his coworkers and friends with a wave and floating over to River. "River, have you seen Boss anywhere?"
"Hm? Oh, yeah! He went to check on you earlier, see how the day off was going for you! Why?"
"N-No reason..." He hummed, looking down shyly as his face flushed red again.
"Ohhh, I see~ Go and find him! He should be by your house!" River smirked, watching as Eugene perked up and nodded, waving goodbye to everyone as he ran out the door.
"Thank you, River!"
"Anytime, newbie!"Eugene had soon made it to his house, floating up to gis window and looking in to see Boss smiling and standing over his body, the music still looping as Eugene knocked on his window to get his attention. "Um, B-Boss? I had someone that wanted to talk to you... Can you come and talk to them?"
His superior jumped slightly at the noise and his fan moved to hide his face partially. "Eugene, there you are. I don't see why not. Lead the way." He hummed, slowly putting the fan away again and folding his arms behind his back as Eugene grinned and flew over to grab his arm, leading him to Luke's home. The smaller boy pulled his superior into the room and into the dream, leading him to Luke, who turned to smile at them, waving them over. "Luke, this is Boss, my boss. Sh-Should I stay, or...?" He trailed, glancing to his superior and then back to Luke.
"You can, but you can go and hang out with Hayden or your other friends if you want." He smiled, waving for the tallest of them to sit, still playing with Kitty.
"Alright, thank you, Luke! I'm gonna go and hang out with some of my coworkers, okay? Have Boss come and get me when you're done?"
"Of course! Go on, I got this!" He grinned, saluting his friend as Eugene gave him a grateful smile and nodded, floating off again as Boss watched the two of them.
"Luke? Your Eugene's friend, right?"
"Yep! It's great to meet you, Boss!" He grinned, setting his kitten on his shoulders. "I was just wondering how other people saw Eugene. He has a high opinion of you." He grinned, leaning back a bit.
The ghost's face flushed a bit as he hid it behind his fan, humming softly. "I see. He's a good kid, very kind. He loves helping people, and he was an amazing addition to the team. He's quite shy, but I find it endearing. And I really wish he could lean to love himself a bit more." He hummed, soon moving his fan from his face again and snapping it closed.
"Ah, alright! Well, what about your personal opinion, less professional?" Luke hummed, grinning and playing with his kitten.
"Well, he's quite sweet. Very nice to be around, and quite good company. If I could, I would probably keep him around more.often than his work hours, but I can't do that. Maybe some day, though." He hummed, turning his eyes up as he leaned back slightly.
"Hm, okay! Well, that's all I really had to ask you! Thanks, Boss, you can go an get Eugene now!" He grinned, setting Kitty back in his lap and playing with his sweet little furbaby.
"Alright then. I'll get him for you. Are you sure that's all?"
"Well, one last question. How do you feel about him?"
"Didn't I just answer that?"
"No, that was what you thought about him. I want feelings."
He flushed again and hid his face with his fan again, looking away for a moment. "Is this necessary?"
"Nah, your reaction gave me all the answers I needed! I'll be waiting here for Eugene!" He grinned, waving to him as Boss nodded and said farewell before flying off to fetch Eugene from the office, though soon found out from River that Eugene had gone back home to relax for a bit.
Boss hummed as he flew up to Eugene's window, knocking on it and getting the boy's attention. "Your friend is ready for you, Eugene." He hummed, his arms folded behind his back.
He looked up and smiled a bit, nodding and getting up, fidgeting with his hoodie strings. "Great! Um, Boss, would you mind waiting here?"
"What for?" He hummed, hiding his face with his fan once more as he tinted pink.
"N-No reason! Just, please?"
Boss hummed and nodded, closing his fan again and moving to sit on the boy's bed. "I'll be here when you return."
Eugene nodded and flew off, waving goodbye to his superior and heading back into Luke's dream just to get a light poke on the forehead and a light laugh.
"Go get him, tiger!"
He flushed red and hid his face in hoodie sleeves, looking up at his friend. "A-Are you sure?"
"Sure as the river reaches the sea! Go on!"
"Did you just-"
"Go! We don't have all night!" He grinned, shoving his friend playfully.
"A-Alright, alright! I'll go!"
"Tell him how you feel and tell me all about it tomorrow!"
"Okay, okay!" He grinned nervously, fixing his hoodie before waving bye to his friend and flying home again, sitting in his window sill.
Boss saw him fly in and looked up, humming a bit and welcoming him back.
Eugene was silent for a moment, obviously nervous, but he soon took a deep breath and squeezed his eyes shut. "B-Boss... Um... I-I...had something...to t-tell you..."
"What are you so nervous for? What did you need to tell me?" He hummed, his ghostly heart skipping a bit.
"I... Well... I-I like you... Like a l-lot... And um... I-I... Well..." He trailed off, unsure what to say next, his heart beating faster and faster.
Boss's face flushed red as he hid it with his fan, humming in thought. "Eugene... Why didn't you say so sooner?"
"H-Huh...?"
"If you had said so sooner, you wouldn't be under so much stress. Come, sit with me."
He flushed a deep red and slowly moved to sit with him, obviously still nervous, but that soon melted away as Boss put an arm around the younger boy. "Your day off today was to relax and destress, not to worry yourself even more. You can have another day off tomorrow. But for now, relax, Eugene. I like you, too, 'like a lot'." He chuckled, kissing the younger one's head head and letting him relax.
Eugene nodded and hid his face shyly in Boss's robes, leaning against him and shivering. It was supposed to a mundane day off, something simple to relax, but it shifted into the beginning of a beautiful relationship, the two cuddling silently and relaxing on the bed as Can't Help Falling In Love played in the background, the two exchanging lyrics every now and again, making the other flush each time. And Luke was surely proud of himself the next after hearing the good news from Eugene. It was a perfect start to a perfect story.
