Eugene had just stepped through the office doors in his usual ghost form, but something was different. Everyone was tense when he walked in.
There was, of course, a reason for this. He had been missing for days after Boss had left him alone at home for no more than five minutes to tell the others that the boy was in danger and would need to be staying with them for a bit until the danger had passed.
Obviously, that danger was much, much closer than anticipated.
Eugene looked so much paler than usual, thinner and shaking and faded, as thought it was taking effort just to keep himself there. He was covered in apparitions revealing the state of his body, battered and bruised, scratched and cut and bleeding and obviously weak.
River was the first to come to her senses, rushing over and hugging the boy tightly, opening her mouth to speak before he cut her off, wrapping his arms around her weakly. "Mom... Where's Boss...? I need Boss..."
She stayed quiet for only a second before sending Sena to retrieve their superior, only to find him not in the office. Of course, he was rarely in the office since Eugene went missing, out looking for him in every place he could think of.
She carefully let the boy go and passed him over to Sean so he could help take care of him and keep him present while she retrieved Boss. She found him after only a few minutes at an old house in the woods, rotting and decaying as it stood unoccupied by any signs of human life. "Boss...! Boss, he's back...!"
"He's-?!"
"Yes, he's really back! Come on, hurry!"
And with that, the two of them rushed back into the office, seeing Eugene weak and shaking in his usual spot by the door, Sean sitting beside him and trying, unsuccessfully so, to heal him. With his body gone, it was impossible, but he still tried.
"Eugene!? What- What happened?!" Boss was quickly kneeling in front of him, lightly trying to nudge Sean's hands aside so he could take the youngest's.
The boy just gave a shake of his head as he held his hands in one and his head in the other. "No time... I can't stay here... The brick house a few blocks from the school a few towns over... I-I'm there... Boss, please... Please, hurry..."
And with that, he was gone, back in his body, very possibly from being jolted awake by something where his body rested. Now he knew the location. Of course, why didn't he check in actual houses?! Oh well, it was too late for that now. They had work to do if they wanted to save Eugene. And so, a plan was formed, quickly and skillfully by everyone pitching in.
But of course, what plan is ever actually followed? They made it to the house Eugene had described to them and found inside the ghost of Eugene's mother inside glaring daggers at a man sitting drunk on a couch and watching a blank screen, very possibly high on something, too. Boss had no time to spare a glance at him to check, though, looking to the mother and giving her a nod as she pointed to a door nearby, locked and bolted shut so that whoever was inside had no way to get out. Of course that was where he would be hidden. Boss quickly jumped into action, asking River and the others to make some noise or something out front to distract the man, phasing through the door when instructions were given.
Soon enough, the others were rapping on widows and doors and walls to get the man's attention outside, and as soon as he had stepped out to investigate, Boss had very carefully pulled a near unconscious Eugene out the room and out the back door, getting the attention of the others and motioning for all of theme to get out of there and quickly. As soon as they reached the office again, Eugene was laid carefully in a back room to rest, shaking and trying to sit up, but Boss refused to let him overexert himself. "Boss, I'll be fine..."
"You need to rest and eat, Eugene."
"Boss..."
"Please, Eugene. You need rest."
He nodded a bit and sighed softly, giving him a sweet smile and thus earning one in return.
"Welcome home, Eugene, my sweet, sweet baby..."
