Chapter 20

Jason

I was on my feet immediately, I grabbed my gear and followed Nightwing into the preprogrammed Zeta Tube. I was anxious to find her, I was determined.

Tigress, Aqualad, Superboy, and Robin met us at an abandoned warehouse in New York. It was just off the shore. We scaled the building, this time taking every precaution to make sure it wasn't a trap.

"Fuck this is taking too long." I became fed up and broke down the door.

"Red, no!" Someone called out to me to stop me but I wasn't listening.

I broke in to find all the windows had been blacked out making it pitch black. I walked forward, the team behind me. I took a few steps forward into the dark when I stepped on something. I looked down to see something silver shine. I picked up the object to find it was Caroline's locket.

"She's been here." I clenched the locket in my fist. A moment later laughed echoed all throughout the large dark warehouse.

"Check again."

Suddenly I heard faint muffled banging, and the warehouse lit up, revealing a large tank full of water.

Caroline was chained to the bottom, completely submerged.

My heart dropped and everyone gasped. I ran up to the tank and hit the glass, trying to shatter it.

"Move." Superboy's gruff voice came from behind. I moved to the side, Caroline's hand hit the glass, she couldn't see well but she knew I was there.

"Hang in there baby please." Superboy then used all his Kryptonian strength to try breaking the glass, but it wouldn't budge. Caroline kept banging and struggling, she was running out of time. 

"Give me a boost." Superboy locked his fingers and let me step up on top of the tank. The opening was locked.

"Lock pick." Nightwing tossed a lock picking kit from his belt to me and I got to work.

I tried and tried, Nightwing tried finding a control panel as Superboy and Aqualad kept trying to break the glass, Tigress was keeping an eye out.

"She lost consciousness."

"NO. No, no, no, no, no." I panicked nothing was working. That was when gas filled the room.

"Jason we gotta go, that gas will kill us."

"I'm not leaving without her."

Tigress had tears streaming down her face. "Jay it's been too long, she's gone."

Superboy and Nightwing then pulled me away. I fought and kicked and they stopped for a moment to look me in the eye.

"Jason please it's been nearly 10 minutes, let her go, we'll die if we stay." Dicks voice cracked, I knew he was right. "She'd want you to keep living, but that won't happen if we're caught here when the gas replaces all the oxygen.

Tears streamed down my face as I looked back at the illuminated tank to see the body of my soulmate floating in the water, pale and lifeless.

I nodded. "Let's go." We all ran out just in time for the low oxygen alerts to go off.

That was it.

We lost.

Caroline was dead.
