Y/N's POV:
It's Valentine's Day, my absolute least favorite holiday. To top it all off, I'm stuck at a show choir competition and had to wake up and 3 am to get here in time. Plus, I got motion sickness on the bus ride, I lost my favorite lipstick, and I couldn't find my best friend at the moment.

Shawn and I were best friends. We met in sixth grade when I got lost in the hallway and he recognized me from a class we had together and walked me to where I needed to go. After that, we were inseparable. I hadn't really seen him around much today. I figured that he was hanging out with the girl he had a thing with, but I was proven wrong when he ended up standing next to me in line to go see our varsity show choir perform. Shawn was always a little bundle of sunshine, so I was slightly confused when he wasn't smiling like usual.

"What's up, Mendes?" I asked.

He shrugged. "I'm just kind of done with today."

This definitely wasn't like my best friend. Something was up.

"What happened?"

"Well we got second," he started before trailing off.

The prep group he was in had gotten first all of last season and all of this season up until this competition. The members were having a tough time coping.

"Shawn, I know you better than that. You like show choir, but not enough to be upset about second. So what's actually wrong?"

He sighed. "She texted me right after we got second saying she doesn't have time for a boyfriend. I had bought her a gift and everything."

I gasped. "She friend zoned you?! By texting? Where is this girl? I'm going to go give her a piece of my mind..."

"She still wants to go to the winter formal with me."

I stopped my rant and stared at him. "Well are you going to go with her?"

Shawn sighed again. "I don't know. She did ask me, but I'd feel awkward. But I'd feel bad canceling on her, you know?"

"Yeah," I told him.

I reached my arms out and Shawn gathers my message, accepting the hug. I felt so bad for him. He is such a nice kid. He didn't deserve that, but he has had the worst Valentine's Day ever. He ends up telling her he won't go to the dance with her, but tells me he's slightly upset about everything, not that I blame him.

*one week later*

I show my teacher my pass to leave early. She smiles at me and sends a wink my way as I walk out the door, knowing what I'm about to do. I quietly go to my next class, the class I have with Shawn. The teacher is still teaching, but she smiles at me briefly before concluding the class as I go behind her podium to gather my supplies.

I hear the bell ring signaling passing time has started. I take a deep breath and stand near the doorway in direct eyesight of anyone who enters the doorway, looking out for who I want to see the sign.

Finally Shawn walks in. He looks shocked at first, but his face breaks out into a grin as he takes in the scene.

I'm standing in front of him with a poster that reads:

"Shawn-
I heard that my friend needed a date,
So I hope I'm not asking you too late.
February 28th, if you're free,
It'd be super sweet if you went to the dance with me.
WPA? -Y/N"

I have a box of blueberry muffins sitting on the desk next to me. Shawn rushes over to me, wrapping me up in his warm embrace. He pulls away with a blueberry muffin already in his hand from the box.

"Thought you'd never ask," he tells me, adding a grin on the end.

I laugh. "Anything for my best friend."

He looks at me still smiling. "How did I get so blessed to have you as a best friend?"

I shrug and laugh. "Guess God was really looking out for you that day I was completely lost in the hallway in sixth grade."

"Thank God for that," Shawn says.

We laugh and eat blueberry muffins throughout the rest of class.
