PRIYA
No one even seemed to notice as Mason hit the floor. "Triplets?" Priya uttered in disbelief, staring at the sonographer.
"One month?" said Lucas, unsure of how he felt about this news.
"Three babies?" said Tai, his jaw dropping. The sonographer nodded and showed them again on the screen; three black ovalish shapes in amongst the white squiggles. Priya closed her eyes and swallowed hard. Three babies? She wasn't sure she could manage to mother one, but three? A tear slid down her cheek and she opened her eyes and looked at Tai, who was grinning down at her. "This is amazing, triple the love!" Tai exclaimed, glancing round at Lucas and where Mason had been stood. "Is he okay?" Lucas nudged him with his foot.
"Think he just had a little shock," Lucas said as Mason stared up at him, wide eyed.
"I think everyone should come back to ours, so we can talk," Tai suggested, thanking the sonographer for her time and taking the black and white pictures she handed him.
"In about a months time we can arrange a paternity test, if that is ummm, needed," she said, glancing at the three men in the room. "Can I suggest you get yourself booked in with the midwife immediately, so that they can get you referred to a consultant. Multiple pregnancies are always considered a higher risk and it is important you get proper medical care." Priya nodded mutely and put her underwear back on. Lucas helped Mason up off the floor and he stood there, speechless for the first time in a long time.
"I'll let you guys go back and talk, I'm not part of this now, apart from as a friend," Lucas said, reaching out to shake Tai's hand.
"Lucas, wait..." said Priya, sitting up on the bed as the sonographer left the room.
"Let's get some fresh air," Tai suggested to Mason, walking him out of the room without a fuss.
LUCAS
"I'm sorry to have brought you into all of this," Priya said, as she pulled her skirt down to cover her thighs.
"Don't be," he said, "I would have much rather known, you know, if they were mine."
"I guess this makes sense why I was showing already, I'm sorry I just never imagined the reason could be...triplets!" she said, staring down at her belly incredulously.
"I don't think any of us imagined this," he replied, "Triple the bump size!" He looked at Priya sat there on the bed, cradling her stomach. He'd never felt so confused about how he felt. Part of him was SO relieved that he wasn't the father of triplets with a woman he didn't love. The other part of him just felt like he'd lost something huge from his life, something he never even thought he'd wanted in his life. It was silly but in his head he'd imagined what this baby would look like- with his eyes and Priya's complexion and her cute little beauty mark. Would she have his lips or hers? In his head it had been a little girl, the most beautiful little girl that anyone had ever seen. And now, she was gone. She wasn't his. None of them were his. "You're going to be the most amazing Mum," he said to her, squeezing her hand. "To all three of them! What an adventure life has thrown you."
"Thank you," she smiled up at him. "I hope I haven't caused too many problems for you and Gen."
"Not at all," Lucas said. "To be honest, this has made me realise what I actually do want in my future. I never thought my future would have kids in it, and it's such early days for me and Gen, we haven't talked about anything like that, but I hope one day, I'm lucky enough to be a father."
"You will be the most amazing Daddy," Priya replied, standing up and wrapping her arms around Lucas' waist, resting her head on his chest like old times. "Just look at how calmly you handled all of this, you're going to be able to handle anything life throws at you." He pressed his lips to her forehead and kissed her gently.
