~Tests For The Heart~
"Dexter? Are you feeling alright?" Computress asked. Her neon green-lit eyes were glued onto her boss as he stumbled out of the teleportation room.
"I'm fine. Is (Y/n) up?" he asked, yawning immediately afterwards. Maybe he stayed up a little later than necessary looking at (Y/n)'s picture. That, and fighting a tiny bit of desire to get up and check on her.
"No. She is still asleep in her room," his assistant responded. His heart speeding up brought newfound adrenaline that spread throughout his body, like passionate fire in a steady forest.
Dexter quickly walked through the lab until he came upon (Y/n)’s room. He stared at the doorknob as if he had all the free time in the world. He needed to get back to work or he’ll be behind schedule...but a secret need kept him rooted to the metal ground.
‘What does she look like when she’s sleeping?’ a distant, yet clear voice pondered in his head. A peaceful expression on her beautiful face? A cute smile that would make him create his own? Her body with the same stillness and gentleness as a sleeping baby fox on a cool night?
His hand twitched. ‘I really should get to work,’ he thought. It took everything within him to turn around and get back to work.
‘Does she like science?’ Dexter wondered as he worked on one of his machines. Oh, how wonderful it would be if she did. Somehow, all throughout his life, every girl he found attractive was either uninterested in the subject or did, and only found him uninteresting. By the face of awe she had when first entering his lab (which was inevitably expected of course, but still), she had to be a least a little interested, right?
Goodness, he hoped so.
During the early hours of the morning, his thoughts jumped back and forth from his inventions and to (Y/n). Thankfully, it wasn’t too distracting, and he managed to get enough done to create free time for (Y/n)’s exam.
He was forever grateful for the self-medical training. Whenever he felt he knew everything about, well, everything, he would teach himself the human body and how to treat certain diseases. Dexter wasn’t that passionate when it came to medical stuff, but it doesn’t hurt to learn new things!
Not only that, but a tiny part of him knew that the information was going to be vital in the future. And now, it proved itself to be right.
Sometimes, his intelligence even impresses himself.
“Dexter?” a sweet voice called out to him. A tingle went down his spine and a grin graced his lips. “Good morning, (Y/n)!” he greeted, swerving his chair around. The human angel smiled bashfully.“Um, it’s actually the afternoon,” she said, a bit more quietly she had hoped for. Before she came in, she had eaten breakfast and took a walk around the lab after Computress told her that Dexter has been up and working since six a.m. She couldn’t help but wonder how a person has such an ability to get up so early and do so much.
“Oh,” the scientist said surprisingly. It seemed like only fifteen minutes ago he was walking out of the teleportation room. “Ehm, well, are you ready to begin the exam?”
She nodded, and in an instant he stood and led her to the examination room he prepared for her.
It was a standard doctor’s office: a small bed at the side of the room, a weighing machine, a height measurement scale, a desk with a computer and a black bag, and a little stool. (Y/n) sat on the bed while Dexter sat down next to the desk.
“Alright, so we’re going to be performing various basic sensory and function tests to check your nerves, reflexes, mental status, all those sorts of things. They’re all fairly quick, so it won’t take long. But first, we’re going to measure your heartbeat.”
(Y/n) nodded. Dexter turned and pulled out a stethoscope, and rolled over to her. “Where did you get that?” his patient asked curiously.
“Oh, I made it myself,” he answered nonchalantly.
