Where we live, there are no other kids around. Just a few other adults, like Mr. Grumps. My dad chose this special part in a little meadow about two or three miles away from town. Don't get me wrong, the place is beautiful but sometimes I wish I had some friends to hang out with, so when my mom told me that we were going into town you can't even guess how excited I was.
I tried to find a cute summer outfit. I don't want to look like a bum if I meet some other kids. I wore a loose-fitting purple tank top with black shorts, paired with black ballet flats. I looked in the mirror and patted down my luscious mane of black curls, staring into my gorgeous hazel eyes. Ha. I wish. In reality, I grabbed a scrunchie and tried to tame my curly black 'luscious mane' into a ponytail. I looked into the mirror into my super-dark-brown-almost-black irises and wished my eyelashes were slightly longer. Sigh. I'll have to wait until I have the right to use mascara.
Speaking of my features, let me take a short pause and describe myself. I have thick black curly shoulder-blade length hair (previously mentioned), olive toned skin, black almond-shaped eyes (also previously mentioned), and full lips. Not to brag, but I'm pretty good looking. I'm no Angelina Jolie (pre-anorexia), but I'm definitely a lot prettier than Susan Boyle. Then again, there are a few decade between those two and myself, so I still have time to grow into my Jolie-ness, and hopefully not the latter.
Anyway, my mom went to visit a food cart while I decided to frolic around town square, daydreaming as usual, about the people I was going to meet, when I crashed into someone.
"Oh! I'm sorry!" I said, helping pick up the folders he dropped right away.
"Oh, no, no. It's fine. It was probably my fault, anyway. I daydream too much." he said. "I'm Archer."
I looked at him. Yes! The first kid I meet is cute! Black hair, tanned skin, blue eyes, pretty tall, and he looked around my age.
"I'm Aphrodite, but call me Abelli."
"Oh, are you new here?"
"Yeah, how'd you guess?"
"I didn't guess. There's only one high school around here and it's pretty tight knit, since it's a boarding school. So if you live in the Foreign Section, you must be going to the ridge."
"Boarding School? The Foreign Section? The Ridge?" How have I been here for this long and not known any of this? Well, I guess it happens when you're cooped up for several weeks. I'm lucky my parents encourage reading, and in our new house, there's a library, filled with book that I personally ordered the first week. I was not letting my parents order me Shakespeare. The guy was great, but he's not exactly light reading.
"I'm gonna guess that your parents dragged you here against your will?" I nodded. "Like I said, where we live is the Foreign section, which is where people who travel live since it's next to traveling ports like bay, airports, etcetera. There are other sections, but the most important is the Dark section. There isn't one blade of grass there, and it'd be in your best interests to avoid there."
"How do you know what are in my best interests?" I joked.
"It's in everyone's best interests." He said. Well. That sounded ominous. On the plus side, I made my first Sorian friend!
"Anyway, I can tell you more about Sor and school if you come with me to this party I'm having."
"Hm...," Maybe I should play hard to get. " Okay!" Or not.
I handed him his folders and he opened one, handing me an invitation.
"Great, see you there," I said and we smiled at each other. The party was at 6:00 and it was now 4:30. I had time.
