Story of a Farm Kitten

This poem is dedicated to my 8 year and old tortoiseshell cat Cocoa, whom I lost to a truck about two weeks ago. I'm so sorry I wasn't there to hold you during your last breath. You were the prettiest cat I ever saw, and I'll miss you with every part of me.

Kitten, Oh Kitten,

Sweet as can be,

With your little ball of cotton yarn,

Come outside to play with me

Just outside the barn.

Your wobbly steps made me smile,

And your tiny mews too.

The way you bounced around the fields

And chased the quails as they flew.

And leaped about with your siblings,

Teasing birds out of their nests

As your mother watched below

While you still unaware of the danger

Ignored life's tests and blows.

Kitten, Oh Kitten,

Come and see

What a lovely gift I have for you.

I fasten the collar around your neck,

I got it just for you!

Kitten, kitten

A bit Older now,

Now you call me out to play

And wake me up each morning

To help me bring in the day

Young and wild

You dash here and there

Learning how to fight

But when the big dogs were on the prowl,

You kept out of sight.

Kitten, Oh Kitten,

No longer small,

You stand tall and proud

With lion-like paws, tiger claws,

And a fluffy tail that draped across the ground.

The years went by,

And you and I

Had to move to the city

Where flashing lights, and loud noises dwelled,

And large buildings replaced the trees.

However you didn't change

You adapted quite well.

You still woke me up each morning,

And cheered me up when I fell.

Kitten, Kitten

My dear old friend,

Your black fur has turned dark grey

Your steps have slowed, and you're not as swift

As you where in earlier days.

One clear day,

We sat out front,

Watching the busy world go by

It was on that oh so fateful day,

That I had to bid you goodbye.

You were out hunting,

Prowling, pouncing,

As most cats usually are.

You were focused on a mouse

Which was probably why,

You didn't see the car....

Kitten, my dear Kitten,

Look at you,

Your life has come to an end.

Nevermind whether you're here or not,

You will always be my friend.
