Undead Halloween

It's Halloween night, one of the best nights in my opinion. Well, that's what I think anyway. My parents want me to socialize and go trick-or-treating at least, so I was gonna try it for once. This Halloween, I was going as the scientist zombie from Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare. The fact that this year, all of my friends are staying home today and playing Garden Warfare makes it boring for me. If my friends turned up to trick-or-treat with me, then it would be fun at least. Luckily one of my friends, Edward, decided to tag along with me tonight to go trick-or-treating. I spent all morning trying to make my scientist costume in the garage.

Before I knew it, it was already 7 pm and our neighborhood is now full of kids in costumes and grown-ups giving out candies. Not long afterwards, Edward knocked on my front door. As I opened it, he was dressed as the Jack-O-Lantern from Plants vs Zombies 2. My father told us not to step foot outside our neighborhood to go to another one, and we must be back by 11 pm. Our neighborhood is pretty big. We have a park which has a lake. A few months ago, three local teens were found dead in that lake but let's not talk about that so much, it's in the past. We also have a few stores, a nearby forest, and also a really big cemetery.

The first fifteen minutes of trick-or-treating was quite boring since we were the only people trick-or-treating alone. It would be a lot of fun if we trick-or-treated with two or more friends. Not long when I thought we were gonna be the only two for the night, a few of Edward's friends joined us for trick-or-treating so we weren't gonna be alone. However, it was difficult to talk to them since Edward and his friends were slightly older than me and they talked a lot about wrestling and football. After going to maybe forty-over houses, I noticed a pale-skinned kid among us. He had silver hair covering his eyes, and he dressed up as the camo ranger from Garden Warfare.

Since he was the only one around my age, I tried to talk to him. "Hello, I'm Dylan, what's yours?" "Hi, my name's Alex", the kid replied. So I started a normal conversation asking about his hobby, his family, etc. He didn't reply to any of those questions at all until I asked: "What video games do you play?" He looked at me and said: "I used to play PvZ Garden Warfare, but not anymore." "My favorite character was the Camo Ranger." He added. We talked a bit more until we reached houses near the cemetery. The happy vibe suddenly changed to an uneasy feeling when I asked: "What made you stop playing Garden Warfare?"

The kid paused for a moment, then he replied: "They bullied me, they ruined my life! My parents as well! They destroyed my Xbox, and abused me! I can never forgive those wretched demons of hatred, ever!" I chuckled softly. "Heh, so what did you do?" He whispered: "I left them!" "So where do you live now?" I asked jokingly. Without blinking, he pointed at the cemetery. "The grave at the far end of the yard, that's mine." "Yeah, sure." I took it as a joke since it was Halloween and spooks are what makes this holiday season fun, so I ignored it being a real fact. Man, I shouldn't have.

Before I knew it, it was already 11 pm and Edward and I had to go. I turned around to say goodbye to that kid but he wasn't there anymore, almost as if he left in a hurry. Staring at the spot where he was standing, Edward called me from behind because we were going back home and I was delaying him, so I ran after him and we walked back home after that.

The next day, I got onto my Xbox and called all my friends on Discord; we were gonna play some Garden Warfare. We were all in a happy and good mood as we hit some Team vanquish matches. As one of our friends asked me what trick-or-treating was like yesterday, I told them about the pale silver-haired kid dressed as the camo ranger, and how he told me he "lived" in the cemetery. As soon as I said that, the entire call got quiet and the happy vibe just faded away. Everyone's tone just changed after that. "Was it something I said?" One of my friends, whose name was Parker explained to me some dark information that sent shivers down my spine.

Apparently two years ago, when Parker and Edward were my age, a kid by the name of Alex Timmothy moved into the neighborhood. He was bullied a lot and abused by his parents, but he loved to play Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare. One Halloween, his parents destroyed his Xbox and he found out. He got furious, and that night, he went to trick-or-treat with his Camo Ranger costume. But instead, he went to the park and hung himself when no one noticed. When someone saw him and tried to save him, it was too late, he died. He was buried the next day and his parents left shortly after the funeral. They packed and left the town within three days. Which is why on Halloween night, his spirit roams the neighborhood, disguising himself as one of us.

As the information entered my head, I immediately left the Discord call and ran all the way to the cemetery. When I got there, I approached the grave that belonged to Alex Timmothy. Sure enough, it was there alright, but the dirt near his grave looked dug and disturbed like something clawed a hole. Whatever clawed it, was it to get in or to get out? It didn't look like the work of a rat or a mole, but rather a human being that used his hands to claw that hole. No, don't tell me. Was this the work of a gravedigger who didn't have a shovel and used his hands instead? Or did I just encounter an undead child last night, and this was what he meant by his "home"? I'm never trick-or-treating ever again. Please, be aware of who you talk to next Halloween. You might be talking to a random kid who lives three blocks away, or you might be talking to an entity, an entity coming back from the afterlife, reliving what it couldn't relive.

Happy Halloween everyone.
