Hey there, my name's Martin, and I have a story to tell. No, it's not a fairytale or a bedtime story, it's more of a real-life experience. A terrifying experience. I got Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville a couple of days ago. My friend introduced me to the game so I was like: "Why not give this game a shot?" So I got it and started playing.
As I started the game, I was told that I would be greeted by an NPC known as Major Sweetie, but I just got greeted by an empty background with no character seen anywhere. Text popped up below the screen that read:
"Don't worry, Major D will be with you later"
I felt skeptical reading that text, and I didn't really know what to do at that point, so I continued playing instead. At some point in the game, I went to the Town Center. There was an objective to find a specific route to get to the so-called Major D. I had to go down a dark eerie-looking staircase that led to a dark basement, lit with a few torches, almost like a medieval dungeon.
Going through it, I saw a figure of a flower at the end of the hall, wearing a soldier's beret. I walk closer as the flower turned to me with an ominous look, which triggered a cutscene. The eyepatched flower said, "I'm sure you think none of this is real, but I assure you, it is." The next text popped up which read "If you want to be a true slayer of the undead, go bring one of their rotting corpses to me, now." An objective popped up that read "Go into a match and kill a zombie player enemy."
I entered a team vanquish match and tried my best to kill a zombie player enemy. I killed a few enemies but I couldn't understand why the quest didn't tell me I completed it. What happens now? I have no idea. Then again I haven't played this game before. Right when I was about to give up doing this stupid quest, I ended up killing the last zombie player which hit the match point. My team won.
I decided to go back to the Explore part of the game, and it spawned me at the town center. But in front of my character lay the dead body of the last zombie player I killed. I walked closer to the corpse to find out I could interact with it by pressing the square button. I pressed it and my character carried the corpse up. The objective was to go back to Major D, so I carried the corpse all the way back to the dark basement.
As I walked in front of Major Sweetie, it allowed me to interact with her. I pressed the square button and it triggered a cutscene. In the cutscene, Major D walked towards the corpse. Text popped up that said, "Well done rookie, now let the ritual commence!" I watched as Major D pulled out a cultist knife and sliced the corpse's chest open, pulling the heart out. Watching in horror, I didn't know if something this graphic would be shown inside a family-friendly video game. Major D then looked at the still-beating heart and cut it open, as blood spilled on the floor.
Major D then took a chalice and collected some blood from the heart until there was no more. She took a large sip of blood from the chalice and held the chalice out to me as I watched in horror. Major D then tilted her head and said, "I, Major Deadly, offer you the chance to join us." This NPC was offering me to join a cult. As if things didn't get any worse, Major Deadly then said, "Join us, Martin Miller, you won't regret a thing."
I immediately shut my console down right then and there. A violent cutscene which contained graphic violence even if I don't know if it was intended to be put into the game? Sure I can handle that. But the NPC said my name in the game. I'm the kind of person who isn't really scared of almost anything at all. But this? This just increased my fear on many levels.
I took the disc out and gave the game away the next day. I swear I'm not touching that game again. Did I get a hacked or fake version of the game? How was I supposed to know?
I never played Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville ever since, even if I went to my friend's house. I never told my friend about the encounter with Major Deadly because I knew for sure he would make fun of me because it wasn't real. The night I encountered Major Deadly, I went online to search if anyone had encountered the NPC known as Major Deadky, or Major D in PvZ Battle for Neighborville. There were no results anywhere on the internet about Major Deadly at all. If I was the only one who encountered the NPC, then what was the purpose? Was it a premonition of bad things to come?
Only time will tell...
