God must have a wicked sense of humor. Maybe when it was time for misfortune to rain, He set up a special funnel just for me. Because from getting galleries to sponsor my solo exhibit, down to my family, everything seems to be going "swimmingly".
Then there's this Im Nayeon, sprouting out of nowhere like the fungi that she is. Now, she's acting all high and mighty just because she shoulders half of the rent? Just you wait.
For now, let's play the famous adage, "Keep your friends close, and you're enemies closer."
"Thanks...for the meal."
Nayeon suddenly turns to me, a little smile forms at the corner of her lips. "Don't mention it. You really needed to eat, especially with how wasted you were."
"Was I now?"
She clicks her tongue, her hands on her waist. "Do you even remember how you got back here?"
No, I don't-the last thing I remember was being at the restaurant watching my family yapping away at each other. Don't tell me this hick saw how plastered I was last night.
"Unbelievable. It's a good thing your sister brought you home!"
"Sister? Who was with me?" My insides start to churn, the bibimbap acquainting itself with Italian food. I swear to God, if it's Seungyeon...
"Seu-...Seo-...Seo Yeon...?"
Oh. Thank God-He hasn't really abandoned me completely. "I see. Did she say anything to you?"
Nayeon pauses and puts her freakishly slender index finger just below her lips. "Uhm...she told me that you should pick up your car by yourself."
Sorry, unnie. You should've have expected me to drink a lot given the scenario.
"Are you done?" Nayeon asks behind my shoulder. "Don't worry about it-I'll clean this while you get ready for work."
What is this girl playing at now? "Hey, if it isn't obvious to you yet, I work here." I glance over to my paintings, just in case it flies over that empty head of hers. "How about you? Aren't you going to do...whatever it is that you do?"
"I still have time, I don't have work...yet," she replies.
Well, well, well. Is this little tick a parasite? "Yet you have the nerve to rent an apartment?"
She smiles confidently, while washing the teacups. "I've saved a lot, more than enough before I work again."
Is it weird that I find her honesty appalling? "Oh, and what is it that you plan on doing?"
Nayeon turns off the faucet and slightly glances at me, with her shoulder blocking her chin. "Me? I moved to Seoul because...I'm gonna be a star."
It maybe the corny line or the audacity of this hick, but I end up laughing the most that I have in as far as I can remember.
"What's so funny about that?"
I try to formulate a response but a string of cackling and wheezing get the best of me instead. Tears start to form on the corner of my eyes.
"Hah! If you hear my singing, you wouldn't want me to stop," she smugly declares.
"Nayeon-ssi, please," I catch my breath, my body trying its darnedest to stop laughing. "Don't push your luck with me."
