Dream was asleep.
But the thing about being an energy being is that you don't really 'shut down' when your asleep. There was always more work to do. More joy to spread, more dreams to give. It never ended.
Not only that, but while he was in the dreamscape, he was succumb to his brothers taunts and painful reminders. And though, he couldn't actually be hurt in this world, he could still feel the pain his brother inflicted upon him.

Dream laid there, accepting this pain filled fate as his brother's goopy form made its way towards him. "Now, now, Dreamy~" He heard his brother say as he remained still on the floor of their forgotten memory's. "It's no fun if you don't react~" Nightmare said, moving a tentacle around the positive guardian.
Dream stared at the taller with empty eye's. He smiled at him, a weak, broken smile. The smile of someone who had long since given up. "I-I s-still l-love you b-b-brother..." He said, choking back a sob. "I l-love you s-s-so much..." He could barely hold back the endless stream of salty tears that fell down his cheekbones.
Nightmare gagged. "You're fucking pathetic." He said, "When are you going to get it, I DON'T LOVE YOU!" He shouted snapping one of Dreams ribs. The smaller screamed as an unbeatable pain coursed through his body.

"DREAM!"
A worried voice shouted, hugging him close as he awoke. "B-Blue...?" He murmured weakly, burying his face into his chest. "I'm here..." The smaller whispered, holding him tight.
Dream curled up in his lover's arms, sobbing helplessly as he recalled the horrible words his brother had said to him. "W-Why doesn't he l-l-love me Blue...?" He asked in a quiet voice.
Blue frowned at his boyfriends misery. He took a deep breath and silently prayed to whatever god exists to kick Nightmares a$$ for him. "Some people just... Don't care..." He said cautiously. He felt Dream sniffle at his words. "B-But... He... He loved me b-before..." He heard his boyfriend say.
Blue sighed. He didn't know how to explain this to the positive skeleton without hurting him. "Some people change, Sunshine..." He said.
Dream turned to him, his face still as beautiful and adorable as the day they first met, even with the tears, snot and the bags under his eyes. "You... You w-won't change... R-Right...?" He cried helplessly.
'Good job, silly! Now he's even sadder!'
Blue placed a hand on Dreams cheekbone, carefully tracking the tear stains and pulling him closer. "I'm never going to stop loving you Dreamy...~" He whispered, kissing his lover softly. "Never!~" He said as he pulled back.
Dream giggled at his words. "I love you too, Berry!~" He said. Blue smiled, "You wanna have a cuddle party!" He said excitedly. Dreams eyelights turned to stars. "You get the snacks, I'll get the blankets!" He said leaping out of their semi-shared bed.
Blue giggled before running to the kitchen to grab the tacos and make the hot chocolate.
He really does love his Sunshine.
