"We are gathered here today to celebrate 75 years of human perseverance and dedication which has kept us all alive! Almost a Century ago in 2068, our ancestors realise that the surface of the earth would be uninhabitable due to many environmental reasons thus creating the life saving idea to relocate the human race somewhere safer, the tunnels. This network of underground systems has given us all safer homes with hi speed carriers to take us between boarders and advancing technology has created such comfortable living space that we have already forgotten what the surface was like. Of course..."

I slowly blocked out the sound of the Senators voice as he gave the same speech he recited every year. Looking around all the faces I could see admiration and respect etched into their features as every single person hung onto the words that echoed through room. Our whole section had turned up to hear this speech and as they stared at the large screen before us I couldn't help but let my mind wonder. The large room was filled with colour and vibrated with excitement. Women wore their most expensive jewellery, men flashed their Rolexes and children had on their best clothing. Although this might seem like a rich and prosperous environment, it was far from. 'Expensive jewellery' wasn't so expensive since diamonds were common and Rolexes had become a dime a dozen. The real expensive stuff belonged to the the founders and their families. We are part of the worker section that specialises in healthcare which is no longer so important due to revolutionary medication that can cure even the most serious of illnesses in a matter of days.

"Ana!" Someone yelled in my ear as I snapped out of my thoughts. I looked up and saw my older brother, Thomas who was shaking his head.
"What?" I question, confused as to what I'd done.
"The speech is over, not that you were paying attention!" I looked around the room and noticed he was right. The music had started to blare out of the speakers as people resumed eating and dancing.
"Sorry, I-" but I was too late. Thomas had already disappeared into the crowd and I was alone in the middle of the room. Making my way to the corner I sat amongst the shadows and watched as people laughed and enjoyed another year of celebrations. Tomorrow work and school would start again after the week long holiday and then life would be back to normal. Whatever normal is.

"Is this seat taken?" Said a soft voice from above me.
"For you? Never!" I smiled at the boy who lowered himself next to me. His mop of black hair that fell to his shoulders covered his emerald green eyes as he chuckled gently.
"Is there a reason you're all alone? I expected you to be the life of the party as per usual."
"Well... I'm not in the mood to celebrate the day that we were condemned to live in this God forsaken place! I'd rather celebrate in the grass blinded by sunlight not in a brightly lit room filled with blinded people." I ranted to the startled boy beside me.
"Wow! Someone desperately needs a distractions from all that pent up anger," he said as he started to get up and grab my hands. "Let's go!"
"Where?"
"Anywhere!"
"No, Sebastian!"
"Yes, Anastasia!" He said mocking my tone.
I sighed signalling my defeat and slowly rose to my feet as he dragged me out of the room.
"Seriously, where are we going, Seb? We aren't supposed to leave during the party!"
"Oh stop worrying will you! I stole my brother's guard rota so I know where all the guards will be at what time. We won't get caught."
It was rare to have non-medical families in our section but Seb's brother and father are both guards of our boarders.
"Ow!" I whispered as I crashed into something boney. "What the hell Seb!" He had come to a sudden stop and threw his hand over my mouth.
"Be quiet!" He whispered as he turned to face the voices from around the corner.
"Don't worry! They're all in the hall celebrating, no one will see you." Said the first voice. It was a man but judging by his voice and silhouette he couldn't be more than 20.
"Are you sure?" Said the second, "if we're caught, we'll be executed!" She sounded nervous but at the same time excited.
"We should-"
"Shhh!" Whispered Seb ignoring my plea to leave.
"Fine!" Said the girl as she moved to round the corner. I grabbed Seb by his shirt collar and hid in a doorway out of sight as the two rushed past.
"That was too close, Seb! If anyone had seen us we could have been in big trouble!"
"Please! The least they can do is give us a slap on the wrist and maybe lower our rations for the next week. Besides, it seemed that they had more to hide. Come on!" He said grabbing my arm.
"No! I'm serious, Seb! We can't afford to get in trouble, not right now! Anyway, I just want to go back and celebrate with my family." I said turning around but I was soon spun around by Seb grabbing my arm.
"Your not going anywhere! Stop being so paranoid. You've always been such a baby about everything! Even when we were little you always acted as if you were better than everyone! For once in your life be daring and take a risk!"I stared at Seb, shock written all over my face. How dare he! Gathering my thoughts I calmed myself down. "Call me when you've stopped being an asshole." I stated cooly and turned on my heel leaving him fuming behind me. I knew Seb had his cold streak but I never thought that he would aim it at me. I could see the deathly anger in his eyes, something I'd never noticed before and to say the least, it scared me. As I snuck back into the hall I was careful not to be noticed.
"Ana! There you are! We've been looking everywhere for you, the section awards are about to start." Said my Mother as she pulled me to my seat. As I rested my arms on the table my mind wouldn't stop replaying what had happened with Seb. My mother nudged me as our section's council representative made her way to the stage. She wore a long black dress that hugged her curves and her blonde hair was pinned into a tight bun with subtle diamonds poking through. She cleared her thought as she stepped up to the microphone and started awarding small trophies to their retrospective winners.
"And finally, we are proud to reveal a new award that we introduced this year! The award for Best Young Mind goes to Anastasia Parks!"
I looked up with my eyes wide as my Mother pulled me out of my seat and shoved me forward with a proud look on her face. All eyes were on me as people cleared a path and I made my way to the stage. I was handed the trophy and just before I turned to leave the stage a voice yelled, "speech!" from the back of the room.
Oh no. Please no. I looked to where the voice originated from and saw familiar green eyes staring back at me, only this time they were darkened and filled with spite. Sebastian. He knew that public speaking was my biggest enemy and my hands began to shake. The room had erupted with yells as people repeated, "SPEECH! SPEECH! SPEECH!" I looked around frantically as I was ushered towards the microphone.
I took a deep breath and braced myself to speak as the room became silent. My mouth started to move but nothing was coming out. Using the podium to steady myself, I started again. "Goo...goo...good afterno...noon. I mean morni-evening! Good evening!" I stuttered miserably. All my usual confidence had evaporated as the whole room stared at me. It felt like hours before the same voice from earlier yelled, "if this is our Best Young Mind, then I fear for our existence!" Laughs and snickers spread through the room as my face began to burn. "Thank You, for the award," I mumbled hurrying off the stage as the representative took her original place to formally draw this years celebrations to a close. As I returned to my seat people had returned their attention to the stage and my family gave me sympathetic glances.

"And a final thank you to all-" she started but was cut off by the screeching alarm that shook he walks and sent everyone into a chaos. Panic plagued the audience as the guards ordered everyone to return to their homes and not to leave until the alarms stopped. As I got up I started to rush out with everyone else following behind my family closely. Just as I reached the doorway I tripped on someone's shoe and fell to the ground. Curling into a tight ball, people kicked and stepped on me in their haste to leave the room. In an attempt to block out the pain I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to think of other things and before I knew it, I was carried to a different world all together.
