Facades of sympathy

“You’re to gain favour of the league of villains”

Besides that demand, he had no other reason to be here, in front of so-called Dabi.

His bright hazel eyes that reflected the poor morning sunlight embraced the villain with a cold stare and furrowed eyebrows. A pearl of sweat ran down his forehead.

The black-haired burst out in laughter, holding his stomach.
Their fight just a few seconds ago seemed to have been forgotten -- it wasn’t.
Despite the man’s clear laugh, Dabi’s ocean eyes were emotionless. Hawks couldn’t think of a human expressing so much but so little.

The villain felt familiar. But from where?
Hawks steadied his grip around the feather’s handle. Its pike laid on the villain’s chest bone, the aorta pulsing right below the thin layer of scarred skin.

Dabi reciprocated the hero's stare, gave him a scoffing expression with a sarcastic smirk on his thin lips. He raised one of his dyed eyebrows. “A villain? You?”

The blond sighed internally as he grinned.
A sharp spark appeared in his eyes.
Hawks chuckled, raising his chin as he put slight pressure on the feather -- yet not enough to make the black-haired bleed.
He was too important to grow his grudge against him. Hawks couldn’t hurt Dabi … for now.

“Sometimes we need to change our ways to reach our goals.”
“And how do you believe that the league of villains favours your goal?”

The hero chuckled.
For a second, his expression changed. Cautious. For a second he believed the villain to set another load of blue flames upon him. Dabi knew that Hawks was at a disadvantage.
Dabi also knew the hero’s determination.

“It’s just that I feel like only true heroes should live in a world like my ideal. Most heroes these days don’t even know heroism.”

Dabis eyebrows shot upwards. He’s a good liar.
Something in his expression changed, Hawks couldn’t define what.
Seems like I have to show him how this game is played.

Dabi grinned.
“So … you’re going to fulfil Hero Killer’s will?”
Hawks nodded.

The villain couldn’t read his expression, the hero had precise control over it.
“We’ll see whether you deserve a chance.”
Both of them were lying.
“What do I have to do?”
That question sounded surprisingly stupid.
Dabi chuckled. “What villains do --”
“I won’t be doing anything villainous towards the public.”

The villain’s lips curled into a smirk, his ocean blue eyes flared for a second.
Another one of these facades, pretending to be flawless as they face this frail society.
“-- But I’m willing to help planning and provide backup, assuming that your boss doesn’t mind.”

The hero pointed at his head with his left index finger, steadying the grip around the feather’s handle. His arm began to become heavy, tensed up.
“You think you’re super smart or something? Our plans work out just fine.”

Hawks watched the quick spark in his eyes disappear, the ocean within them seemed frozen. His stare was cold. Hawks couldn’t identify a trail of emotion in it.

“I don’t doubt the latter but you’ll be quicker with my connections.”

Dabi’s eyebrows raised slightly, now he stared into the space between them. Hawks let him think, easing the grip around the feather’s handle as his arm gave in slowly. He clenched his teeth, hiding the fatigue that crawled upon his body.
