Chapter 2

"Nothing will end this, nothing to prove, there's nowhere to run, all hell is breaking loose." ('Hollow Bodies' - blessthefall)

You wake up quite early, and it seems so nice outside, so you decide to take a walk, and maybe grab some pastries. You grab the map you've gotten from Jake a few weeks ago, and try to navigate yourself in Duskwood. Fortunately, you run into Cleo on your way.

"Morning!" she greets you happily. "Where are you going?"

"To get some breakfast," you reply.

"Café Rainbow!" Cleo says immediately. "They have some great pastries, and their cakes are..."

She does a chef's kiss, and you burst out laughing.

"Can't wait to try."

"I'd tag along, but I gotta go see my mum, she needs some help with something, I don't even know." She gives you a quick hug. "See you later!"

You wave at her as you watch her go, and then take a slow walk towards Café Rainbow. There is quite a few people inside, some are just getting takeaway breakfast or a coffee on their way to work. You walk in, and look around.

"What can I get you?" a soft, female voice asks you. You take a quick glance at the menu.

"Can I have two of your all butter croissants, and a small latté, please?"

She hands you your order, and you pay. You can feel the croissants are still warm and soft, your coffee steaming. You walk out, and sit down at one of the tables, and just watch people walking past you. As you eat, you check the time. It's ten in the morning, and Jake hasn't texted you yet. You're a little bit worried, but also common sense says that he's probably fast asleep still.

The croissants taste like heaven, you can feel it melting in your mouth, and the coffee is one of the greatest ones you've ever drank. You grab your phone, and open the active group chat to thank Cleo for the suggestion. She sends a winky face and a heart emoji back. Before you finish your breakfast, you get an incoming call from Jake.

"Morning," you say as you pick up.

"Hey. Where are you?"

"At Café Rainbow, having breakfast," you reply, and you hear Jake letting out a heavy, relived sigh.

"Good. What are you having?"

You smile at his question. You two don't really do small talk, so it's a bit awkward, but still, it makes you happy.

"Croissants. Do you want me to get you anything?"

A few seconds of silence before Jake answers.

"Croissants sound awesome, and could you get me a cup of coffee as well? Just plain black coffee."

"Sure. See you in a bit then."

You hang up, finish your croissant, and go back into the café to get Jake's order, and get yourself one more croissant. It tastes great, and you wouldn't miss having breakfast with Jake. You walk back to the motel, and knock on his door. He opens the door with a small smile.

"Morning," he greets you, and you step into his room. "Hey. Your breakfast."

You give the little paper bag with the croissants and the cup of coffee to him. Jake puts them onto the table, next to his open and running laptop, his phone is on charger on the bed.

"Thank you for the food," he says as he sits down. "So I take it you've eaten already."

"Yes," you nod, smiling. "But I got some more because they're very good."
