Opposites attract

There's something wonderful about the theory, that someone's heart might ache for its complimentary part in someone else, subconsciously searching for a balance in life that can only be found in another person. It's a theory witnessed in so many couples, there's little to dispute it.

Every year though, Hogwarts' School of Witchcraft and Wizardry's exam period tries its very hardest to do so. .

It's always seemed cruel, exams in the summer, when people should be spending their time outside with friends, soaking up the sun. It took all of Sirius' effort to get (Y/N) out in the first place, though he wasn't able to get as far as to persuade her to part with her textbooks, instead forced to settle with them joining them for their afternoon by the lake.

He doesn't mind though, glad just for the company he's been missing ever since the revision period started. He spends the afternoon with his trousers rolled up above his knees, cooling off in the lake while she sits on the grassy shore, surrounded by textbooks and humming uncommitted to his various comments.

It's a strange system, but one that's working for them.

However, a small fish swimming past Sirius' foot breaks their afternoon's arrangement with one large splash as he flails his legs in momentary panic accompanied by a string of profanities. By the times he's calmed enough to find the humour in it though, his laughter is met by dark eyes.

On the shore, (Y/N) sits tense, shoulders hunched as the water drips down her neck. Her textbooks and notes are painted by the slightly discoloured water, pages turning soggy and ink smudging.

Sirius pales, frozen in the murky shallows.

"I'm so sorry, Love ," He apologises hastily, "In my defence, I wasn't aiming at you."

"Sirius." She groans, dropping her head into her hands with a frustrated sigh. "It's all over my notes."

Sirius wades through the water towards her, his trousers, not quite rolled high enough before his paddling escapade, cling to him uncomfortably as he re-emerges. He scratches the back of his neck sheepishly as she flicks water from her parchment.

"Here," He offers with one of the dopey smiles she usually loves and pulling his wand out with a gentlemanly flourish. "Allow me."

A flick of his wand sees the water evaporated from her notes, but does nothing to ease the scowl on (Y/N)s face. She shakes her head with a disappointed sigh and the type of eye roll given by condescending adults and the occasional stuck-up prefect, but never (Y/N), and it brings a scowl to his own face in response.

"I said sorry," He repeats, "It was an accident, (Y/N)."

She heaves out an exasperated breath and slaps her textbook shut, the snapping of the pages filling the warm summer air. She folds her arms across her chest and he knows instantly he's in trouble.

"Believe it or not, Sirius," She huffs, "We have exams and some of us actually care about them so if you could just stop acting like a child for ten minutes it would do the world of good."

"Merlin, (Y/N)," Sirius says coldy, "Don't hold back then."

"I just- do you even know when your first exam is, Sirius?"
