i woke up to bright sunlight streaming onto my face.
blinking, i tried to readjust my vision to the light. i was in my bedroom in the avengers tower."hey kiddo," a voice trembled. i turned my head to nat, who was sitting beside my bed. her eyes were red, as if she'd just been crying.
thats when the memories came back. peter. spanish. lockers. wanda.
i sat up. "wheres wanda?" was my first question.
oh god. why was nat crying? what happened?my head was pounding, thoughts racing a mile a minute.
"shes fine." came another voice from the door. tony. dad. he was leaning against the frame, in an attempt to look collected, but i could tell both of them were anxious, tense.
"where is she?"
"in my private hospital, being examined by the best of the best. i sent helen cho." tony replied.
i turned my gaze to nat. "if wanda is fine, then why are you crying?"
she looked at me as if she didnt know how to tell me.
"dad?" i redirected my attention to him. "why are you so anxious? whats going on?"he wasnt looking at me.
"peter." it was all he had to say.i gasped softly. "they got him too?" I collapsed back onto the bed. god, I was so naive to think that they wouldn't target peter.
"peters alive. he was shot two times, when nat and steve were taking care of you and wanda. thanks to his reflexes and abilities he managed to escape with his life.
the school says it was a masked school shooter. three students that happened to be in the same class as him were caught in the crossfire.
they didnt make it."oh god. this was my fault.
"where..." my voice cracked. "wheres peter now?""also in the hospital."
"can i go see them?"
"right now theyre both unconscious and being operated on." tonys voice was strange. cold.
as if he was trying not to break down right there. that was always my dads logic. pretend nothing bothers you, so you dont have to deal with emotions.
but i knew how much he cared for peter. for wanda even.nat didnt have that grieving process. i could see she'd been crying for the last couple of... hours? days?
"how long have i been sleeping?"
"almost a full day." she replied, finally meeting my eyes.
i slowly sat up and got out of bed.
"this is my fault tony."
"nobody blames you pay. you did all you could."
did i? it was me who mentioned i was iron mans daughter in public. i could have gotten to wanda faster. I should have killed the motherfuckers who hurt my family.
but i didnt.
i could feel my breath getting shallow. it was hard to breathe all of a sudden.
"im going to the roof, i need a second" was all i could say before rushing out. they didnt follow me.
i burst out on the roof of the avengers tower. it was pretty bare up here, no plants or buildings, just a lot of gravel. i walked out to the middle.
there was no one here.
i started shaking, my breathing becoming even more irregular.
wanda and peter were hurt. it was my fault. i mentioned our identities outside that house.
