The night she left was one of the worst nights of your life.
Seeing the person you love continuously choose everyone else but themselves is sad to watch, but up until the point they choose everyone else over you? That's heartbreaking.
So, you knew her reasons for leaving were valid and you didn't blame her, knowing you'd probably do the same thing too.
You were the ravenette's best friend and she told you everything.
You knew how much she loved Josie and you was by her side through it all. When she found out about the merge that the Saltzman twins had to go through when they turn 22, you were there for her.
You were there when she planned out schemes that would help push Josie into choosing herself, but always failed, because of Lizzie.
The blonde always did have a hold on Josie. Everyone understood it was a twin thing but everyone could also see that Josie was sometimes miserable.
The brunette never got to do anything for herself. Lizzie was always in charge of everything, whether it was making decisions on what to watch on movie nights, where to go and eat on the weeknds, what routine to do for the talent show. Josie never had a say.
Penelope hated seeing the brunette siphoner be taken for a doormat, always at Lizzie's beck and call to the point that her selflessness, her need to always be there for others, caused her to be neglectful of the witch.
Josie never had time for her.
Dates were always cancelled because of Lizzie, she never had time for Penelope anymore and that's why they broke up.
However, the witch she had you.
You held her as she cried herself to sleep every night for the first 2 weeks of their break up. You helped her try and help Josie, even though they were no longer together. You did everything you could do to help her because you wanted your friend to be happy and helping her help the brunette, made her happy.
It wasn't enough though.
The Mystic Falls Pageant was the last straw and that's what pushed the witch to leave and never look back.
The whole time she was focused on Josie, you was focused on her. You fell for her, not realising until the night she left, the last time you spoke.
"So, you're really going?" you asked the witch as you caught up with her at the main entrance of the school, after seeing her walk away from the brunette.
Penelope stopped in her tracks and slowly turned around to look at you, her eyes slightly red from crying.
"Yeah. It's too much to bare, I can't stay here and watch what happens to her next. Not if she keeps putting Lizzie before herself." she sighed as she walked closer to you. "I've gotta move on."
"I get it." you told her.
"I'm gonna miss you though." she reached out for your hand to pull you into a hug.
"I'm gonna miss you too, Penny" you said back as you embraced eachother in the hug.
That's when it hit you.
That's when you realised you were in love with her and you didn't want her to leave and for a split second you wanted to tell her, thinking that maybe you could be the one reason for her to stay, but she wanted Josie to give her that one reason.
You weren't enough for her to stay.
So you didn't tell her.
Alot had happened since then these passed 4 years. You and the rest of the Super Squad were still in Mystic Falls, but it's not like you were all exactly trapped there, you still travelled for work or on group holidays.
