Cara sat there, humming a tune to a familiar song she heard on the radio by her side. Her hot chocolate was getting colder by the minute, and she knew that if she did not drink it- it would be a waste of what the people had provided her with. She picked up the speckled mug, inspecting bubbly, brown liquid before drinking it down all at once.

She never thought that she would be a part time dog sitter. The dogs that she was supposedly looking after were fast asleep in their cage, snoring away.

It was holiday break, and with her family away at christmas, she had nothing else to do but sit in peoples homes all day whilst they are away also. She didn't think it was that bad honestly, getting paid for sitting on a couch for half a day or walking the dogs around the streets. It was quite pleasing to her.

Cara got up from the couch, walking to the kitchen to put the mug in the washer. She was too lazy to hand wash it herself. Peering out the window, Cara noticed that snow was beginning to fall like a blizzard and soon would be all over the dogs fur if they went outside. She was not one for cleaning up. Her hands were cold already, despite being in the warm house. Cara took a seat on one of the kitchen chairs.

She had been looking after the two miniature dachshunds for four days, and the owners were coming home tomorrow. The owners were nice people, and gave her with everything she needed. The dogs were also well behaved, and house trained, (something she was not expecting due to other dogs she had looked after.)

One of the dogs woke up, and plodded along to Cara with a bright, happy face. "Hey there, buddy."

Cara picked up the small canine in front of her and brought it up to her lap, the front paws of the dog on her chest. "I'm guessing you slept well." she laughed as the dog, named Tina, licked her cheek.

The company of animals too her, was more enjoyable than having people around her. Animals couldn't judge her, take the slightest notice in what she looked like or wore.

At school cara had a few friends, Maya, Lucy, Calum and Lara. Each were different in their own way, and were also spending the holiday season with their families.

Cara sighed, and put tina down on the floor. She wasn't close to her family, and they weren't close to her. They had to deal with running their own business and traveling was an issue. Whatever occasion, or holiday, if they were needed they would go.

A knock came from the door, and cara frowned. She wondered why someone would be out in this weather. the person knocked on the door again and cara groaned "I'm coming, I'm coming!"

She walked over to the door, and swung it open where a tall boy with brown hair stood. "Surprise! i've come to give you company!"

There at the door stood Calum, her best friend, with a cheesy grin on his face and a small present in his hand.

"Calum!" Cara welcomed him in, engulfing him in a hug. "I thought you were on holiday!"

Calum shut the door behind him and laughed. "I came back early, because I knew you would have been lonely with dogs sitting around you."

Cara rolled her eyes at him, shoving him slightly. She couldn't pretend she was annoyed at him of course, he came over to someones house for her.

Tina came from the kitchen and waddled over to Calum to greet him. The other dog, named Richie, woke up and also wondered to meet the stranger in front of him.

Cara moved the dogs out of Calum's way, and put them in their cages. Soon enough they settled down and slept against the warmth of the fire.

The present that Calum brought was unwrapped, and without a doubt, it was a mug shaped like doctor who's tardis. Typical.

cara laughed at the present and thanked calum for it, before offering him a cup of coffee.

"Nah i'm good, thanks" He shook his head before going off to stroke the sleeping puppies in the cage.

Cara appreciated the comfort of one of his closets friends but both of them knew that deep down inside, cara was missing her family.
