By the time I pull away from them and they give me space to think, I realize everyone is rustling around the camp. I scan over the crowd for a certain copper haired boy. A few eyes watch as I scan the crowd once more.
"He was still on the ship when it was sinking," Milo whispers to me. "He made me swear to protect you."
I grip Milo's sleeve tightly as his words register. The sickness from earlier only makes the news worse. My stomach heaving. The sour taste on my tongue keeps me from speaking. The world spins under my touch.
I hear Tinkerbell and Lily speaking but their words are on deaf ears. Their faces peek between the boys whenever I look.
"Oh, Mae," Milo coos. All three of them crouch beside me with terrified faces. "You're going to be okay."
"She hasn't slept, ate, or had anything to drink these past two days." Ollie explains. "I was trying to get her to drink something before the three of you appeared and ruined my plan."
Issac snickers. "You had a plan for once, Ollie?"
When I feel like my body has calmed down, I lean back. Rye brushes the loose strands of hair from my face. He holds my gaze for a while if he is searching for something.
"Would you like me to ask the mermaids to see if they can find him?"
I shake my head before throwing my arms around his shoulders. I bury my face into his neck as I cry. He holds me tightly as he whispers soft words. His comfort is reassuring. He stood in the center for a while. Issac and Milo remain by our sides the entire time, both with one hand gently touching me to show that they are here as well. By the time I cry myself out, it's dark again.
I pull back and rub my face harshly to remove any trace of tears as I can. I refuse to look at the ruined shirt Rye wears and he gives me a look that shuts down my apology.
"I'm going to look one last time to see if he made it. For all we know, he could be hiding somewhere in Neverland."
"Can we check his spot?" I manage to ask between hiccups.
"Of course." I miss the look he gives the two boys. "Do you want to grab a cloak first? It's cold outside of camp."
Before I can turn to move towards the cabin, Milo is holding it out towards me. I gently take the green fabric to realize that it's one of Peter's cloaks. Rye helps me put it on without any words.
"How did you-?"
"I knew you were going to want to look. I went and grabbed it a while ago." He sends me a flirty grin. "Besides, a pretty thing like you needs something to show you're taken."
His flirting is normal. I need normalcy. Issac sends him a nasty scowl.
"That is Pan's girl, Milo. Could you be any more wolfish?"
"Says the boy who sleeps on the dirt everyday."
"If I stayed in the cabin, she wouldn't have anywhere to sleep."
"Oh, no, I'm sure Peter would have offered her his bed." I turn away before I can see the wink he gives. My cheeks are burning in response to his comment and I grip Rye's hand.
"Let's check his spot then the beach, please."
The blonde nods, his warm eyes bright as we slowly head from camp. In his hand is a small torch he grabbed from one of the camp guards. "Milo, Issac, you keep everything in line."
The angry shouts of the two boys makes me giggle. My hands grips Rye's as we quickly head towards Peter's favorite spot. I nearly dragged him up the small hill. The light gives me a general understanding of the direction and Rye doesn't stop me from leading the way. He only ensures that we are safe.
