In my weapon form, Maka, her hair flying everywhere, swings me around, using me to slice the Kishen Egg infront of us into two pieces. The demon evaporates until only his soul is left.

"This makes ninety-eight, right?" Maka asks.

"Yeah... just two more to go--another human and a witch," I say, transforming back into my human form.

She chuckles. "Let's not screw up on the witch again..."

I crack a smile, open my mouth wide, and eat the soul.

We walk back to the apartment together, just inches apart. Soul... no. You can't think about your meister that way... You're partners, that's all, I chastise myself. We are silent for the entire walk.

Maka unlocks the door without saying anything. Why is she being so quiet? Did I screw up again?

"Hey, Ma--" I start, but she has already locked herself in her room.

I plop down on the couch and turn on the television, beating myself up. You idiot! You hurt her! It's all your fault! You didn't listen to her last night, and now she's all pissed at you. You are such a moron, Soul. "Arrgh!" I shout out loud accidentally.

Maka peeks out of her bedroom quietly. "You okay?" she asks.

I notice the tear stains on her cheeks. I soften my facial features and look at her caringly. "Maka... are you alright?"

She seems surprised by my question and wipes her cheeks. "Never better," she lies and ducks back into her room.

Shit, shit, shit. How did I screw up without saying hardly anything? I wonder. I growl at myself. I know Maka heard me, but this time she ignores it.

I hear light sobs coming from her room. I gently pad over to her door and knock. "Maka?"

"G-g-go away, S-Soul," she stutters between sobs.

I don't leave. I make a few steps, imitating like I had left and stand silently outside of her bedroom.

"W-Why... No... D-don't go... I l-love you... Soul."

I nearly fall backwards. I stumble, but manage to catch myself. A lamp falls over and crashes on the tile of our hallway.

Maka rushes to her door. She's a wreck by now. Her hair is no longer in its signature pigtails, but it's all ratty and down her back. Her mascara--when did she start wearing makeup?--runs marathons down her cheeks. Her skirt is rotated to one side, like she's been sleeping... but I know better than that. She's been crying since we got home.

"Maka..." I take a few steps towards her.

"No!" she shouts. "Stay... stay back!"

"Maka, whatever I did, I'm sorry!" I say, my face growing red. Not cool, Soul. Not cool at all.

"It... it's not you, Soul." My dirty-blonde-haired meister looks down.

I can't help but crack a smile. "You sound like you're breaking up with me."

She runs to me and buries her face in my chest. She bawls harder than I've ever seen her cry, tears flowing out of her eyes and onto my orange shirt.

I wrap my arms around her, confused as hell. "It's okay. I'm here. I always will be."

"Promise?" she asks my chest.

I lay my face in her ratty hair. "I would never leave, Maka. I love you," I murmur.

She picks her head up off of my chest. "You... love me?"

"Of course. I always have.... I always will."

I can't hold back the impulse to kiss her. I press my lips to hers and close my eyes. I can tell Maka is startled, but soon she seems to relax.

I pull away, scared to see what her reaction will be.

Her eyes well up again and she wiggles out of my grip. Before she can relock herself in her room, I grab Maka's arm.

"Let... me... g--"

Against my gut feeling, I press another kiss to her lips. Maka writhes under my grasp. She breaks the kiss and looks up at me, hurt in her eyes.

"How... how could you, Soul?" A new round of tears overflow her eyes, but she doesn't leave.

"I'm sorry, Maka... I don't know what I did... but my intention was never to hurt you..." I whisper.

"I know... it's just..." she begins.

"It's okay," I say. "Whatever you need to say, you can say it to me."

"I love you, too. But I don't understand why... why you... why you're dating her. If you love me so much, then why are you with Sofie?"

Shit. I'd forgotten about her... Uh-oh... if she finds out... "Because I was trying to get my mind off of you," I say, ashamed of myself.

Sofie and I have been dating for four months now. She's tall, lean, and has black hair. She's no Maka, but she's still a really good girl, which is why I'd chosen her to be my fake girlfriend--because, if all else failed, if Maka didn't like me, I could live with dating Sofie. But now... I'd never imagined what I would do if this happened.

Maka takes a few steps back and rights her skirt. "So..." she starts, looking at her petite feet. "What happens now?"

I hadn't considered that one, either. "First of all," I say, "I break up with Sofie."

Maka looks at me, shocked. "Y-you don't have to do that, Soul."

I cock my head. "I want to be with you, Maka. Of course I have to do this." I grin, showing off my pointy shark teeth.

The Next Day

I wake bright and early to cook breakfast for my soon-to-be girlfriend (I hope). I cook scrambled eggs and bacon (mainly because that's all I know how to cook--not because it's Maka's favorite). Just as I place the glass plate loaded with her food, Maka emerges from her bedroom.

She sniffs the air and looks at me questioningly. "Did... did you make breakfast?" she asks, a look of disbelief on her face.

"What?" I smirk.

"Thank you." She sits down and digs in as I begin to make my breakfast, consisting of a bowl of DeathGrams, my favorite cereal.

We don't say much at breakfast. We say our standard "how did you sleep?" "What are you planning on doing today?" Neither of us says a word about what happened last night, but we both remember it clearly. Nothing needs to be said about it. We have an understanding on the subject: as soon as I break up with Sofie, we are a couple.

After breakfast, we go our separate ways for the day. Maka is planning on hanging out with Tsubaki and Liz and Patty because today is Saturday. After I see Sofie, I plan on hanging out with Black*Star and Kid.

I walk out of the apartment after taking a shower and telling Maka I'll see her later. I call Sofie and tell her to meet me on the front steps of the DWMA in twenty minutes.
