I S A D O R A
PRESENT DAY
"Dora, dad wants to see your grades!"
I groan from my sprawled position before pressing the pillow tightly against my ear.
Her persistent voice manages to penetrate the walls of my room despite how she's downstairs.
"Alright, keep your voice down already!" My irritation emerges since she's just disrupted my precious sleeping time.
After forcing my body into a sitting position on the bed, I rub my temples in tiredness.
The digital clock on my nightstand reminds me of my predicament.
2:30 PM
There goes my entire morning based on my inability to wake up early and do something productive with my life.
I need a job.
A snicker escapes me knowing the same narrative emerges but my laziness always reigns.
After doing my much belated morning routine, I stagger down the stairs before sauntering to the dining room.
The sight of my father is first to greet me as he's sat at the head of the dining table; his brows furrowed in concentration as he's speedily typing on his laptop.
My sister who is sitting beside him is focused on her phone while absentmindedly twirling the spoon engulfed in her meal.
How times have changed.
Gone are the days when we addressed each other first thing before starting the day.
I blame it on technology.
If I'm lucky these days, I'll get a 'how was your day' from both of them.
I think you can guess our conversations barely transcend the usual small talks.
The aroma of egusi soup fills my nostrils thereby making my stomach make its usual gurgle noise.
It probably wasn't wise to skip breakfast.
"You really need to improve your sleeping schedule," the authoritative voice of my father is first to disrupt the silence, "It's already a quarter to three for crying out loud."
His gaze is still fixated on the screen as he pauses his typing.
Heaving a deep sigh, I remain silent as I secure a seat opposite my sister.
"Your sister woke up early to help me prepare the meal you're about to eat and what were you doing?" he presses on further as he finally acknowledges me with his apathetic expression.
