RUBBERBAND, TATE MCRAE
Emily leads me down the hall towards my father's office. I'm so nervous I think I'll drop the ceramic container with cookies. If I do, I'll make a fool out of myself. Everyone will think the boss' daughter is a cluts. I can't have that so I tighten my grip on the small container. The black skirt I wear sashays with each step I take. My white dress shirt is tucked into it. My shiny new shoes are slightly uncomfortable. My dark brown hair's up in a high ponytail with a white scrunchy. I hate this school uniform... Why did I ask to go to private school?
The worst decision of my life but I'd rather not have friends. I'd rather exclude outsiders from my life so they're not hurt when they find out. It's the reason why my one and only friend is Katherine Amaya. She's around my age. Just a year older than me. Her father is just as bad as my father. Alba and Yaretzi were also beginning to be my friends but they're older. Adults.
We're the group of friends with messed up fathers.
We were united by a group of fathers who're friends and/or use each other for their own personal benefit. Under normal circumstances we probably never would have met. Had I not asked to go to private school, I would not have joined ballet. Nor would I have met Katherine. Had I not had the father I have, I never would have met Alba and Yaretzi.
I would have had a normal life.
Perhaps that's why I'm so attracted to the guy in a navy blue suit seated across from my father. I knock on the door. My father perks up once he sees me. The grin on my face is so wide it almost hurts. I walk towards.
"Dad," I greet him. "I've brought you some cookies."
"Oh, gracias, amor [thank you, love]," he says.
"You could share them with Mr....?" I trail off because I have no idea who he is.
"Taylor," he says. I can't quite catch where his accent is from but it's there. I love it. "Matthew Taylor."
