I sat by the fire, a bottle of tequila in my hand with a cigarette pinched between my index and middle finger. My legs crossed, absorbing the heat from the fire. As the fire cracked and spit flankers, I listened to the sound of laughter coming from my friends. As usual I sat alone, drinking my problems away. College was rough, my job sucked and my friends were arrogant and obnoxious. I took a large swig of tequila and swished it around my mouth before swallowing. I heard footsteps behind me, and I turned to look at my best friend Mia. I smiled at her, flicking the cigarette and pressing it between my lips.
"You have to quit that you know, it takes away 5 minutes of your life," she said, pulling up a chair and sitting beside me.
Mia shivered, pulling her hoodie down over her arms and crossing her legs in the chair. I shrugged it off, blowing out the smoke and handing her the bottle of tequila. She screwed up her face and I set it down on the small table attached to my chair.
"Well, it'll just kill me quicker," I chuckled.
I dropped the cigarette on the ground and squished it beneath my flip flops. I brushed my hands on my t-shirt and turned to talk. Mia sighed and looked at the fire. I could tell something was wrong, but I didn't know what. Summer just started. She took a glance at me, before gaping her mouth to say something. She stopped herself, reaching for the tequila. I snatched it away from her, pointing a finger at her as the bottle was in my hand.
"Seriously?" Mia huffed.
"Tell me what's wrong first," I retorted.
She rolled her eyes, "we're taking a trip to Miami tomorrow. So you're going to be stuck alone for three months."
I arched a brow, "couldn't I just come with you?" I raised the bottle to my lips and took a sip.
Mia paused, shrugging her shoulders and watching me with a disgusted look on her face.
"You reek, go change,"
"Nah I'm good,"
Mia rolled her eyes and straightened her legs in the chair. She clapped her hands together then flicked a fly off the palms of her hands. I nodded and pursed my lips, chugging the rest of the tequila before dropping the bottle into the recycling bin.
"I suppose I could ask my mom if you can come. You staying at my place tonight?" Mia questioned.
I nodded, "obviously I'm not going home."
Mia nodded and stood up. I then followed her, folding my chair and propping it on my side and wrapping my arm around it. I shoved my cigarette pack into the back pocket of my shorts and followed her to her car. She popped the trunk. I put my chair in the trunk and slammed it down. I got in the car, buckling up and rolling the window down. I didn't have to worry about her drinking and driving, she doesn't drink. I inhaled sharply, watching everyone start crowding around the fire. Mia backed out and made her way to her house. The gravel crackled under her tires and I stared out the open window.
We made it back to her house fifteen minutes later. Mia parked the car and tapped my leg. I nodded and got out of the car, stumbling over my feet then regaining balance. I heard her laughing behind me and I stuck up my middle finger, pointing it at her. She grabbed her keys and unlocked the door, letting me in first. I flicked on the living room light and taking my shoes off. I made my way to the bathroom, closing the door and stripping down. I scrubbed my smudged makeup off with a makeup wipe and turned the water on. Once the water warmed up I stepped into the shower and let the hot water run over me. I turned around, stealing some of her shampoo to wash my hair. Once I cleaned myself I stepped out of the shower. The light flicked off and I groaned.
"That was funny when we were five, seriously?" I yelled through the door.
I paused, hearing silence. I arched an eyebrow and covered myself with a towel. I sighed, poking my head out through the door. The entire house was pitch black. I walked out into the hallway slowly and grabbed the bat her father props up against the hallway wall. I held tightly onto the towel and crept into the living room. I felt someone grab me from behind and covered my mouth. I screamed, swinging the bat. I heard a knock then someone falling to the floor.
"Cassidy!" Mia yelled.
I looked over and saw Mia being dragged out of the house with her legs and arms flailing. I groaned, gripping the towel and baseball bat. I stormed my way to the door and threw the bat at the figure. I tripped, falling down and knocking my head off the concrete step.
I groaned, "oh I'm too drunk for this."
Mia's screams muffled as the trunk of a car slammed shut. I stood up slowly, not caring about the towel at this point. I staggered my dizzy self towards the car and banged on the trunk. As if it would open. There were footsteps behind me and I turned around, the car sped off and a bag was thrown over my head. I kicked and screamed, pounding my fists on whoever was there. I felt myself being lifted and thrown into something. I felt around, scratchy carpet, cold and tinny. I groaned, trying to sit up. That was until a trunk was slammed on my head. I fell on my back, kicking the sides of wherever I was. I yanked the bag off my head and heard tires squeal beneath me. You've got to be kidding me.
The next thing I knew, everything went black. I didn't know if it was the alcohol or the smack I took on the concrete steps.
