It was evening by now and the panic was starting to fill Elizabeth, slowly starting in her heart flowing out into the rest of her body, and her breath seemed locked in her lungs only allowing small breaths to escape. It was an hour before the ball. She was to get her letter at the ball, her assassin was most likely to be at the ball, her soulmate would probably be too. Someone knocked on the door, interrupting the flow of thoughts streaming through her brain, startling her.

"Come in," Elizabeth stood up, expecting a scornful Mother to barge through the door. Her face relaxed a bit, but not completely when William's strong figure quietly stood in the door frame.

"Oh, it's just you," Elizabeth slumped back down onto her chair, wringing her hands, tears welled up from deep inside coursed down her cheeks.

"Disappointed?" William's face adorned with a smile for a short-lived moment as he saw her tear-streaked cheeks, along with her red puffy eyes with her light pink nose that was turning redder by the second. She looked adorable with her light red cheeks complimenting her green eyes, he had to admit... but now was not the time.

" What's wrong?" Elizabeth felt the seat next to her sink as William dropped next to Elizabeth pulling her into his chest, his arms moving up and down as her shoulders shook with every heart wrenching sob. His warm chest welcomed Elizabeth as she stained his white shirt with her abiding tears.

"The ball is soon, I am getting my letter at the ball, my assassin could very well be there and I don't even know if my soulmate will be there to protect me," another surge of tears burst out of Elizabeth's eyes, as she spoke with great hiccups.

"Well, if your soulmate isn't there, I will be their darling, to protect you" William's grip tightened around Elizabeth's waist in an attempt to make her feel safe and loved, more specifically in his arms. Elizabeth's butterflies were relentless as she got pulled deeper into William, his scent stronger than ever, it wasn't overwhelming but calming, it gave you a sense of heaven. A small moan escaped her parted lips as her sobs seemed to subside. Elizabeth softly smiled, into his chest and William felt it, causing him to lay his chin on top of her tresses and softly plant kisses on top of her head. Rose, a maid walked in, her face flushed at the sight of the girl wrapped up in the boy's arms. Elizabeth looked up with her red-rimmed eyes and William's grip loosened around her stomach.

" My lady, the guests are arriving," Rose spoke quickly and left, as she felt she was intruding on a private moment.

" Well love, let's go," William gently spoke into her hair, secretly not wanting this moment to end. Releasing her bowed frame cautiously as if he thought at any moment she would break. Carefully he stood up and offered Elizabeth his arm, she hesitantly linked her arm in his, standing up, wobbling. His strong hand stabilized her and she stood a bit taller. With that William led his darling out of the room.

"Hello dear, you look beautiful," Lady Moore came in with her husband Sir Moore. They were the last of the quests to arrive. Lady Moore gave Elizabeth two kisses, one on each cheek, and Sir Moore gave William a handshake. William was greeting people at the door with Elizabeth. Elizabeth's eyes had gone back to their light, yet deep green. The red in her nose had gone leaving only an enchanting rosy color laying smoothly from her right cheek all the way to her left. The corner of Elizabeth's plump lips were tugged up in a tiny, but true grin. The orchestra began to play a waltz. The guests switched the way they were dancing and flowed into the rhythm of the music.

"May I have this dance?" William turned so as to stand in front of Elizabeth, bowing with his hand outstretched.

"You may," Elizabeth softly giggled, curtsied, and gently placed her hand in William's. He led her to the dance floor, and for a fleeting moment, all of Elizabeth's worries were gone, her red dress engulfing her as she waltzed, and whirled around. Getting lost in the notes, spinning in time with the theme. Each spin was another one of her worries flying away. Each step was a step to letting go. That is until she halted mid-spin when she saw the flash of a soldier. all of the joy was drained from her face as he walked up to the door.

" A letter for a Miss. Elizabeth Wright," He yelled into the ballroom, his voice bouncing off the walls, creating an echo. Everyone went silent and turned to face Elizabeth. With blank eyes, and an empty expression, she walked over to the soldier and he handed her the letter.

"Thank you, " Elizabeth murmured. Shakily she opened the letter, she could feel all the eyes boring holes into her head. She read it and looked up with unreadable eyes mixed with a bunch of emotions but on the forefront of it all was fear. Her dark green eyes couldn't seem to get any darker but somehow they just did. For, on the page read two names, William Robinson, her best friend, and Prince Charles, her sworn enemy.
