Saint spends the rest of the afternoon by my bedside; I still haven't left the infirmary. I like it better than I like the room assigned to me here. Children aren't running around the infirmary and making irritating noises.
Saga is one of the loud children I've met here, but I happen to like her. I hope I never scared her when I went on that rampage. I hope I never scared Saga, Sogi or Ms Mane. When Saint wasn't around, they were the only people I really talked to.
"How long are you here for?" I ask Saint, wanting to know if he'll leave me again.
"Aris asked me to stick around until Project G is completed, so I'm here for however long that takes. It'll probably take a couple months to plan everything and train everyone."
"I can't wait a couple months."
"We'll see how everything goes."
"At least I won't be too much trouble to be around now," I say, remembering why Saint wanted to get as far away from me as possible. "How sure are you that the cure will work on me?"
"It worked on everyone else before you."
"Okay," I say.
Saint stands up from the bed and nods to a nurse walking past us. The nurse responds to Saint's nod with a forced smile. I suppose she does want us to leave now. Honestly, given the glances I noticed she has been giving us, I'm surprised she hasn't asked this of us.
"If you don't plan on waiting months to get Mathea and Kane back, then we should probably go see Eve," Saint holds out his hand to me, and I allow him to gently pull be off of the bed.
"How long has she been here?" I ask as I slip on my shoes.
"We brought her in yesterday evening. We actually got into contact with her before that, but she needed to sort some things out before she could be brought here. She already knows what she's supposed to do. Everything's basically set. It turns out threats are more than enough to motivate people to do things. And we were right, she's a Filter. It is a little weird that she seems more scared about us revealing her secret than hurting her family."
"If everything has been discussed, what do I need to see her for?"
"She played her part before we brought her here; she gave Mathea a phone or something and said she showed your sister the only place she should answer it. You have to convince Mathea to go along with everything. She'll want to hear your voice."
"Mathea's on the phone?" I ask Saint, but I'm already moving outside the door.
I need to go to the elevators. Aris did say Eve is on Bunker Level Three. It's strange that Aris put her on that level. It's probably his idea of a joke to have Eve surrounded by the people she believes are sick.
Saint has already caught up to me, and we walk towards the elevator alongside each other. I notice a few guards walk closely behind us, and as Saint and I enter the elevators, the guards follow. I really will be closely monitored from now on, and I know I deserve it.
"Remember, Eve can't know we're taking the other Gifted out of the compound. It's probably a good thing you chose not to tell Mathea that, too; Eve might get a little suspicious if you talk to Mathea when she's not around."
I don't reply to Saint. My only care now is to speak to my sister, and if only for this moment, I don't want to think about how I will be deceiving her. It's all for her own good.
I'm the first out the door once we reach Bunker Level Three, but I stop walking once I realise I don't even know the room to go to. I look behind me to find Saint looking at me, but he turns away and takes a left turn. Saint then stops in front of a door, preventing me from moving any further.
