George spares Lennie from Curley's wrath by shooting Lennie in the back of the head after reciting their shared dream of owning a farm one final time.
~a few days later~
George walked to the place where he shot lennie. George purposely made it seem as though he shot lennie but he never did. After everyone was distracted george ran back to lennie he told him to hide in the bushes and hide good. george told lennie as he looked him dead in the eyes "You gotta hide and you gots to hide good so nobody ain't gonna find you." and so lennie did hide and a few days passed until george had been able to get away from the men. As he walked away you could hear the men in the background talking and asking questions amongst themselves.
