They walked down a dark bridge, the city lights shining in front of them. Y/N thought Madripore was a beautiful place. She imagined what kind of life she could have here. The worst part of Hydra was the quiet. She hated quiet, Madripore was never quiet. She remembered from her few missions there, it was like a never ending party.
She was stirred from her thoughts by Zemo's voice. "If you want to keep our cover you're going to have to pretend you don't hate me, darling." He snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him.
She had been ignoring him ever since he told her Bucky would have to pretend to be the Winter Soldier for their plan. She knew how Bucky felt about the man he had been when he was in Hydra's control. She didn't want him to have to relive that, even if it made sense for the plan.
She sighed letting her tough exterior fall for a moment, "I don't hate you Zemo. I was just trying to protect him."
He thought it was interesting how she went from a stone faced killer to a worried friend in such a quick time. "I don't think he needs your protection," he explained.
She looked at the ground as she walked. "Maybe he can hold his own in a fight, but he still needs to be protected. He's fragile." Maybe he was a terrifying super soldier to the rest of the world but she still remembered caring for him after missions. She remembered his screams when they would torture him.
"How so?"
"He doesn't remember everything they did to him, but I do. I worry what will happen when he remembers." She thought of what she had seen him endure. But he always fought back, that was why she respected him so much. He was the most determined man she had ever met.
"Who is it that you worry for?" He asked. He knew the super soldier's temperament was volatile and it wasn't out of place to assume that if he were to have a traumatic experience he might lash out.
But Y/N wasn't worried about what he would do to other people. "Him. I worry he'll tear himself apart if he holds onto this pain." She looked back at Bucky, he was too far away to hear what they were saying but when he saw her expression he gave her a comforting smile.
Zemo worried about her. She couldn't care for everyone else, when she so clearly needed to heal her own trauma. "And what of your pain," he asked.
She looked back to Zemo and met his eyes. "I know my pain. I can deal," she stated firmly.
"And he can't?"
"He shouldn't have to," she whispered as they arrived at a parked car on the bridge.
"Here's the deal, no matter what happens we need to stay in character. Our lives depend on it," Zemo explained. His voice was cold and serious. Y/N thought about making a joke but she decided against it.
Zemo got into the passenger seat and pulled Y/N in after him. She found herself seated on the man's lap again. Rather than using a seatbelt he wrapped both arms around her and pulled her into his chest.
She shivered at the contact. "Getting a bit feisty, aren't we," she joked. It's just a mission, she reminded herself. But the feeling of his warm body pressed against hers was still driving her insane.
His breath fanned against her neck as he whispered. "You'll find that I'm a bit of a method actor." His closeness made her suck in a short breath. Her grip on his thigh tightened involuntarily.
But of course she couldn't let him have all the fun. "What a coincidence, so am I," she said, moving her hand up his leg, waiting for a reaction.
